a nurse on board for the older ones amongst us that might be caught short or need their daily medication.

Hi Tony. Yes mate they were from Avonmouth but not to be confused with Rice Bros. Ltd., with the blue lorries also from Avonmouth. These were, as written on the headboard, Rice Bros (Avonmouth) Ltd. A much older company. It was inherited by two brothers Mervyn and John Rice from their father. Mervyn who had no interest in the company was later bought out by John who decided just to run two Volvo F88 outfits on contract to Frigoscandia. This was from about 1969/70. and both were shipped mainly out of Southampton. The first was driven by Andy Stratton who was later joined by his elder brother Ennis. They were a very familliar sight in Southampton where they were both basically based doing a lot of work out of Funtley Abbatoir to such places as Paris (Rungis as I believe in the photo) and Marseilles. In the latter years they dropped the fridge work opting for tilt work.

By the way Tony I’m hoping to join forces with ‘Charlie One’ and attend an old codgers coffee meeting over at Pat’s. I am off crutches at last (after seven months)but will still be under the eye of the hospital for the next 2 years so they tell me.
Regards , Nobby.
