Pat,
Thanks I couldn’t remember his surname although I have spent a few evenings with him in Routiers,
no drink involved of course
I remember 1 trip he had an anchor on a flat trailer with no sheet for Marseilles it was raining and he was worried they would sign his CMR Wet !!
Regards Richard
ERFMAN
Hi Mike you are correct, hope you are keeping well, long time no see, give me a shout if you are over my way and I’ll buy you a pint !
Regards Richard
Hi Richard
Thought it was you but I did’nt know about the Stringers days, long time ago. I’ve been retired for 12 months now, following the MAN/ERF farce i spent the last 2 years at Hendy’s selling Stralis which has turned out to be a very good truck " like all the other imports not quite as good as the ERF’s with their American drive train",that’ll get em all going!
I keep in touch with some of my old customers and of course Meachers so I’ll be in touch and take you up on that pint
Mike
hi all,
hi richard , (maggie d) , fantastic photos , you made that cross loading look like a work of art ! , the merc looks amazing ,how did it compare to the aec and the leyland ? , was your trucks single or double drive ?
here is a couple of pics for today , many thanks to ted newman for leting me use a pic of one of bob newmans earlier trucks , taken in the late 70’s , but i dont know the location of the yard , is it nursling ? pat would know ! ,and again thanks to ted for a more recent pic of bobs steam roller , cheers pdw

Hi pdw,
They were all double drive,I brought the Leyland new from John Sparshatt, then he started Spartruks in '74 and sold me the Merc, a lot more comfort than the others !
Give my regards to Bob (Nunkey) Newman when you see him,I look out for him by The Mortimers but haven’t caught up with him yet.
Regards
Richard

Hi PDW
I would say that was taken at the yard where Williams Shipping now have containers and offices you can see the motorway (M27) embankment behind, it was where the batching plant stood when McAlpines built the motorway.
This pic was taken from where the Seddon was parked some years later I’d say.
I think that Bob was in partnership with the late Colin Harris at the time, who later bought him out and then changed the name to Harline Transport (using parts of the names Harris and Pauline Colins wife)
Regards Pat
A pic from Bubbleman’s Scrapbook thread a few days ago a Meachers ERF
Regards Pat
Yes. Colin Harris and Bob Newman were in partnership. Think they were called Harris and Newman! Highly original. They had at least one Big J non sleeper pulling for STS in the early days when I was working for Horrid Ransome.Later progressed to Maggies.232s I think.Regards Charlie

Hi Charlie
Didn’t they trade as Robert Newman Transport till Harline came about? I also thought they ran 3 x Maggie D 310’s?? Bob the Hat drove one of them as did a chap call Nigel I believe the other was Les who later had a blackout and smashed up one of Mammoth Transports trucks, hit a parapet I think?

hi pat , (ainacs) thanks for the reply and info (as well as charlie) , ted newman said he thought he might have some more photos kicking around and would try and dig them out , but seem to think they are of a f88/89 and a f10/f12 .

Hi PDW
That Scania I had on for Hall and Pickles was P82 and yes long gone went to Africa, Tanzania I think and yes that does look like a Scania we broke up but I think the one you are thinking of had a horrible looking Globetrotterish roof extention on I will try to find the pic.
I spoke quite afew times with the transport/workshop manager from Mansel Davies as they had seen my PHO100P loading steel for export at various steel plants in South Wales and we did in fact sell them some spares for PHO99P and it was the only Scania in their fleet at that time as I believe they became a Volvo Dealer!
Regards Pat
Hi Pat,
Didn’t Black Barry Evans drive the Hall & Pickles P82 ? wouldn’t the African’s take him as well !!
Regards Richard

Another pic from the Scrapbook thread with a Southampton link
This time a pair of Molo Transport Fodens, I think that this pic was taken on 105/6 berth Southampton docks you can seee the container terminal in the distance. I know that Roger Whitehorn bought some of these Fodens from Molos and operated them for a while on containers.
