Mappo.Did Fred ever have his Son in law driving for him? .Or maybe I’ve lost the plot again.
To be honest Charlie one, i dont know mate.
I suppose he could have done but not while i was there.
Do you remember his name ?
Whoops I,ve just realised i spelt diesel wrong on my last post.
Trying to remember Mappo but it was a long time ago.Maybe Trevor or Terry. Not sure. It’s starting to give me a headache Sorry.Did he even have a Son in Law?
Now you,ve got me confused Charlie one.
I assumed that when you mentioned a son in law you knew
he had one. I,ve got a headache as well now.
My memory tells me that Fred had a couple of young kids at home
whenever i went round there.
I remember this cos when Mrs Croucher used to call them in from
outside she,d shout at the top of her voice " come ,ere you pair of - - - -s
Fred was ok to work for. Definitely no aires or graces though.
All I can remember Mappo is having a couple of nights out with this guy who told me that he was Freds son in law.Good looking feller.Curly hair.Said that Fred worked him hard because he was family. Not much use eh? Perhaps someone will put me mind at rest.Regards Charlie
Another one of Bubbleman’s gems of local interest (Thanks Mark)

Fred CroucherWho remembers Fred ? I used to drive for him when he had the
4 Mans 16-232 with column change.Mappo
Hi Tony, I remember Fred Croucher a big chap. I think he used to have a F88
quite a fancy paint job red white and blue. I remember doing a trip with my
dad when he was driving a bubble (F86). We went somewhere with Fred
don’t know where it was a long time ago. When my old man reads this he
will probably put us straight. If I remember he had a motor bike shop in
Bournemouth Road, Chandlers Ford. I did many a mile in the passenger’s
seat of my dad’s truck, and my own truck, just wish I have taken more
photos.
These are in Macon when I was on the first steps to my career
Doing my apprenticeship as a fitter.

mappo,
was Fred any relation to Bert Croucher who rode for Southampton Speedway team in the 40’s/50’s and was manager in the 60,s 'til they closed? He had a garage in the area I believe. Love your input into this thread along with a few others and the pics. are great. Thank you all.

Hello Kev,
Yes you,re right mate,Fred was a giant of a man and he had
the F88 before the M-A-N,s which were also red white and blue.
Right again about the motor bike shop in Chandlers Ford.
He started that when he finished with transport.

Sorry mate didn’t mean to offend, I didn’t know if as a boy you may have been taken along to Bannister Court to watch the “Saints.” as it was quite big at the time, first division stuff, with some great riders including Barry Briggs. Then again if you didn’t follow speedway you’ll say “Who!” Quite recently there was a pub in the area who had a display commemorating the old stadium and speedway years. Not sure where it was though!
Southampton Speedway 1958 was quite a stepping stone in my young life.
A couple more gems from Bubbleman’s Scrapbook thread related to Southampton
I used to take these trailers all over the UK and Europe
This was taken in Turin (I think) Driver was Jim Ski
And this one of A M Garage on the Normandie Ferry that used to sail from Southampton! I remember the A M Garage but not this Berliet, I believe they did a lot out of Beauvais!
Thanks Bubbleman
