Found this pic of YAD654X a Scania 112, I think it is Ken Daly, all it says on back is still on French groupage!!! Must have been on Southern Transport STS or could possibly be Phil Dibden!
Here’s one that Larry ‘Gypsy’ Fitzgerald drove for me a nicest 143 you could ever hope to get!
Rich who I work with at the moment and also like me worked for Cabmont
asked me to post some pics of his first trip abroad and a short summary
of his trip.
In 1980 I was working for Cabmont Erith, based in Southampton on the ACT Contract. I asked Frank Allen if I could do a trip to Portugal for him. So in mid 1980 I took Bob Courts Transcon down to Lisbon. This was my very first trip over the water, so in at the deep end in the days of permits and carnets. Of I went with my wife and young son, in through Vila Formoso down to the TIR park at Lisbon (Alverca). It took two and a half days to clear customs then of to Cascais to unload. Then reload at Matosinhos (Porto) then out through Valenca - Tui to Burgos via Ourense N525 Benavente N610 Palenca N620. Then away home pre auto route days. Loved it and did a few more trips over the years for different people. SHINEY BOOTS CUSTOMS AT ALVERCA MIGUELS ON N1 BETWEEN IRUN - VITORIA LUNCH IN PORTUGAL MRS DOING THE WASHING TAKEN A BREAK [/b]

I remember AM Garages old trucker but alas no other details. However I certainly remember the ‘woman’ you referred to. I first laid eyes on ‘her’ whilst loading out of Bayer’s works at Notre Dame de Gravenchon. One of Onatras was on the next bay to me, suddenly the Turboliner door opened and out she came, floral print dress, matching shoes and handbag and two days worth of heavy dark stubble. I thought someone was ‘avin’ a laugh’, I sure was! It was the most unfeminine thing I’ve ever seen. I subsequently saw ‘her’ on several ferry crossings and could never understand why she didn’t at least attempt to have a shave!

Hi Richard, certainly got my old memory going there! Onatra registration 13
from Marsielles. Spent a memorable week-end down there with 4 of thier drivers one time. Andre Ogar in Le Havre, good for TIR clearance and to iron out any problems. I always called him “The gent behind the beard”.
Very fond memories of A.M. Garages. from Birmingham. I actually tried to
start a thread but got no response. Silver and blue Mercs. Do you remember
“Big Al” and also Tommy Mann (cigar smoker) who eventually went to live in the States. It was me and Al who blocked the link-span at Normandy Ferries
when the dockies wanted to drive the trucks off. We both drove off onto the ramp
and the dockies blocked it so we locked the doors and left them there.
That ferry did three trips with the same trucks on!!!
Allo mate, yeah it’s me. Finally found the site, late again, no change there!
It’s taken me a month to read all the old threads and I’ve really enjoyed reading about so many old pals and seeing the photos. Like most of us I never got around to taking any pictures and that I regret. Be lucky mate, :
Hi Gaz, good to hear from you . How.s retirement or have you found something
else to do ?
Nothing has changed on Jacko,s mate, still the same routine, got two to
Cradley Heath tomorrow, early start again.
Hi Mappo Glad you liked my pics
It was a good trip.Unlike the next one A rough DAF a load of rubber for Burgos
blowout on the trl and a broken jack [ wheel changed by a friendly French farmer ] Tipped at Firestone reloaded at Los Carralos de Buella and the startermotor packed up On the way back up the Spanish customs man pulled to many pages out of the carnet .So when i got to the French office i had the book thrown back at me as his page was missing so i walked back the Spanish side only to find they had just changed shift . I got it sorted in the end.
Then drove striaight up to St Malo [could’n’t sleep with engine running] .
Did i ever ■■■■■■■ Truckline when docked at Poole and the lorry would not start
and the air was down. But thats another story
Great story Rich, and considering it was only your 2nd trip, Quite eventful aye.
Best way to learn the job in those days i reckon, have problems and sort them out yourself. No mobile phones then to ring the office and ask for help aye.
You mentioned in your previous story that you did a few more trips for other firms. Did our paths ever cross i wonder.
If you,ve got any more pics mate, how about putting ,em on
Hi Mappo 1 Mistake it was ship back Cherbourg not St Malo
I drove car transporters for years and did a trip down to Malaga.I led 5 transporters of show cars down for a press launch
And did 1 Italy and 5 Spains for PJK
