Bordens had a works at North Baddesley, near Romsey IIRC, Buzzer

Rownhams Road
North Baddesley
Southampton
SO52 9ZB

Borden had a plant Vilajoyosa near Benidorm I think. Produced cling film

TWU 671M was a part Ex when I was at Prince’s. Someone from Pompey had it and was pulling fruit out of the MMD Quay IIRC.Harvey might remember, he had a hand in the deal. I can’t see who is driving it in that photo. Scattercash has been enlisted to shed some light.
That ought to be posted on the ASR thread too.

Buzzer:
Mate where did you get that picture from ? what if anything do you know about SCA think they shipped out of Southampton but before my time, Buzzer.

Adrian Chambers from Hove started with 1 vehicle in late 1966 & developed a UK/Italy full load service. Avon tyres from Melksham, Dimplex from Southampton both became regular export customers. Return loads included Vespa scooters to the UK importer in Bristol.
In 1967,SCA (Freight)Ltd took a unit on the Chandlers Ford Ind Est (IIRC Mayflower Close) & many drivers were able to cut their teeth on TIR work driving SCA’s Magirus Deutz 4x2 & 6x4s across Europe not only through So’ton but also via Newhaven & Dover.

In May 1969,SCA ordered 35 12m Crane Fruehauf “Rag Tops”

Rapid expansion led SCA to move to Ratcliffe Cross Wharf off Commercial Rd E14 which offered bonded & warehousing facilities. Though specialising in the Italian market-not just full loads but groupage & even road tankers, SCA developed into the French(1971)& German(1973) markets establishing subsidiaries in both countries offering bonded facilities. This enabled SCA to offer money back guarantees on express deliveries-36 hrs transit,5 days per week from E14 bond to Milan or Turin depot bond.

SCA 1 (2).jpg
Magirius Deutz were replaced by Scania products, both tractor units & Drawbars.
By 1973, SCA claimed to operate 100 vehicles with 200 staff employed & continued to expand

SCA 2 (4).jpg
3 LHD Scania110s used on the Italian service. The RXW (Ratcliffe Cross Wharf) day cab 80 was used for shunting. All are coupled to the ubiquitous SCA rag top trlrs.
On the express services, vehicles were double manned. The Milan express service changed over at Avalon .

By the time of SCAs demise in Jan 1976, only about 24 express vans & tractor units were operated, but still about 120 staff.

SCA 4 (3).jpg
Chambers had raced a Lotus Elite in the early 60’s & in 1971 SCA entered a Chevrolet Camero 228 in the British Saloon Car Championship.

SCA 6 2 (2).PNG
The Australian driver Frank Gardner came 2nd in the 1972 BSCC Championship & won it in 1973.

sca 3 (2).jpg
The Camero was parked in the warehouse & sold by the SCA receiver in Jan 1976.
Following SCA’s demise, several ‘new’ companies acquired some of the SCA equipment & permits.

Roolechat as usual a very informative piece on SCA from beginning to end so a pat on the back for that, cheers Buzzer.

Borden F88 240 in Poole dock…no security then, about 1974/5.

I can rember 2 brothers ( Jones I think? ) driving for them when they were at Chandler Ford, and a Pete Humpries, who had an accident and hurt his back whilst stripping a tilt in Italy…i think they had M.D 6 X 4s…
Peter later went to work at a Peugeot garage in Winchester, and I believe, later emigrated to Australia…

Kev Harline were blue IIRC run by Colin Harris before he started Harris distribution, think his son posts on TNUK and he will know for sure Buzzer.

GeorgieBoy:
Hi Charlie,

I can remember at the age of ten ‘‘playing lorries’’ up at Nursling, with Pat Duffy and Roger and Ryan Whitehorn.

The old 310d Maggies we had in STS livery in Robert Newman days, then the change to Harline and the dark blue with red chassis. will try and look some photos out, not sure how to add them yet, but I’ll try!!!

They were therefore Green & White before repainting in Harline colours. Possibly POR…S or UOT…T Reg ?

Hi all, yes Harline are blue but the two Maggies I am talking about were white with green stripe same as STS and have it on good authority that it is Mr Elkins sat next to said rolled over Maggie. :sunglasses:
