I was going to suggest apples. Then I blew the pic up and noticed in the rear trailer there is at least one crate I think. Not bad for a one eyed man eh? Regards Charlie

Truly remarkable vision there Charlie boy, you better come and sit in my oak tree to warn me of toll collectors approaching from the Wellow vicinity, could pay you with pickled shallots and jars of jam with cheese & toast to accompany, cheers Buzzer.

Buzzer:
John West we at Davies International used to unload and palletize for Sweatheart but they had a new name by then which was Huhtamaki so can only imagine it was Japanese take over or the like , we used to un stuff two or three loads a day sometimes four if I could talk every one to stay on, some were waggon & drags all from Germany then Wincanton got in on the job and they used to load out of our ware house.
Alan Watkins had a yard in Hunts Pond Road, not far from our present yard of today, he liked a drink or three on the social side and the pub he used in Titchfield called the Coach & Horses but that is now houses as is his old yard. He ran quite a few ERF’s and Leyland peanut punchers Marathons, he had a busy period once and had a Volvo on demo from a second hand dealer and the freelance fitter he used rang me and said he aint never going to buy it and gave me the number of the dealer, I rang and bought the thing but the problem was that I used the same fitter in Watkins garage, anyways Watkins got wind of the deal and chucked my motor half way through a service and the fitter out the yard instantly, never spoke to him after that. He loaded sweetheart up and had a contract with Unilever out of Port Sunlight for the main of the return traffic, in the end one of his sons Steve ran it but he unfortunately died at a very young age.
Still go past where the yard was with my horses and think back to when it was buzzing but as in so many cases these old companies fell by the wayside and disappeared for ever, cheers Buzzer.

When Alan Watkins (Transport)Ltd was sold/finished in 1990 (?) they were, IIRC, approx 20 units & about 30 trlrs. The units were mainly ERF’s of various vintages & at least a couple of Leyland Roadtrains were still operated .Though still doing the Sweetheart International/Lever Bros, I think Coca Cola Schweppes were the biggest client & curtain siders predominated

My memory is not the best but did’nt John Pearce at shirrel heath take on wakins motors, I worked for JP in the early 90’s and used to load sweetheart plastics and take loads to scotland etc. Also a lot went to mac’D at basingstoke.

It changed for the worse when he suddenly took the wakins work/motors.

Mikey did you know Dave Morgan, when he worked for me we used to call him the “fire man” always said if I went truck racing he would be the pilot in the hot seat, perhaps this below will be a memory jerker, Buzzer.

Don’t know if these have been posted before, found whilst searching for nipper’s christmas present,

I think Jimski who posts here on the Southampton thread used to drive that one (the real one !)

Now thats something eh! Can you actuly buy that one?

Hi Danne,
One off Mate, look’s the part though!

What an excellent tribute to Pat.

Unlikely Pete, the fleet number denotes it’s a Manchester based ERF,they had 3 OCL contract Big J’s,Light blue and white,I worked out of Manchester and the corrugated sheeting to the rear of the 20 ft containers looks very much the same as the large warehouse which took up a large part of the depot on North Street Cheetham Hill.

I know i whant one! Hmm maby i will have a go with my sons lego…

In early 2015, I finally retired from driving lorries for a living,
having been at it since 1965, so I don’t get to drive on the
motorways very often. Last Sunday I was on the M6 & M62,
and earlier today on the M6 & M65. I was driving my car at
about 60 mph,and the 44 ton HGVs were hurtling past me
probably doing 70 mph. I thought at first that these
satnav jockeys are running “On The Wire”.
I then thought that following the EU Referendum in June,
and the new Prime Ministers several visits to Brussels,
perhaps Theresa May has increased the “56 mph Speed Limiter”
to 70 mph… Is it me ? Ray Smyth.

Buzzer. Yeah I used that very road train before having a new ERF, I knew of Dave who I believe now lives in Holland someone told me. He had a f12 on for you I think. Did another decent bloke called Ronnie come from your stable as well?

I liked that old Scammel, oddly had a fold in half double bunk. Great picture. Thanks.
