Look at that super model lads, we even saw the inner workings of the “Man Shed”, such a nice change from the dilapidated fence that Charlie was supposed to go and paint!
Thanks Gazzer ! But I’ll should in form you that the fences were ALL painted year for last and the man shed too, just thought I’d let you know
The lad I got to do it was good as gold did great job !! I’ll get you picture if you wanna !!
No need for a photo of the fence Jimski, I believe you. The contractor from Alton would have needed a night or two out to get to you on his electric charriot!
There have been some changes in Southampton docks lately, with Solent Stevedores taking on the train loading work from Pentalvers. I stopped Wee Jock and asked him the score. He’s still on for Pentalvers and Danny Moss is working for Solent Stevedores. That now makes Danny a docky!
Hello Richard/Maggie D, Hope you are well. Re: my search for Robert Baillie staff from the early 70s, you kindly replied
on page 393,and mentioned Terry Walker. On the “Robert Baillie Transport Portsmouth and Horndean” thread which I
started last December,I have had a post on there from Tim Walker, son of Terry Walker,a very interesting read.
Tim still lives in Horndean, and is a lorry driver.

Hi all i have been asked by chippy to let anyone that knows him that Ronnie Newcombe aka Basher is not well he is in Frimley hospital, i will let you all know when i get more information. Its all bloody doom and gloom at the moment.
Gerbil
Sad news is that Ron Newcombe has passed away on Monday 16th, I worked with him for about 4 years at Bam Nuttall great bloke, RIP mate
Hi S1mmo,
Sorry to hear the news about Ron Newcombe (R.I.P.) another of lifes characters departed.
He drove for me in the 90’s started as a UK driver, then after seeing the likes of Gaz IOW,Gerbil, & Chippy etc. who were driving in Europe, he kept pestering me to let him do international work. One Friday afternoon he arrived back in the yard around lunchtime, and asked if there was anything I wanted him to do,I said nip in the van down to Poole and pick up a cheque for me that a certain Freight Forwarder had been promising me for about 6 weeks for some work we had done, about 2 hours later back comes Ron into the office,“There you are boss here’s your cheque”,well done Ron thanks did you have any problem ? “Well when I got there he said he hadn’t got his cheque book,so I lifted up his computer and held it out of the window, his office was 3 floors up ! and all of a sudden he found his cheque book in his desk !!” He then asked again about going over the water,I said “You can ship out Monday night to Rouen with the groupage,a few of the other drivers are shipping at the same time they’ll show you the ropes” he was like a dog with two pr / tails !
Monday night off he goes down to Portsmouth to ship to Le Havre, next thing I know is I get a telphone call at home from Portsmouth police at about 11 pm to tell me that Mr Newcombe will not be going to France that evening, and the keys to the truck are at the police station, and Ron was on his way to Winchester prison !! His passport and flagged up on the computer I managed to speak to someone who informed me when Ron was about 17 he was put into a young offenders institute and had run away to see his girlfriend and baby, and not gone back. I explained to the woman dealing with it that he was now in his mid thirties, had a wife and children, and a steady job and I would stand guarantee for him. All to no avail as he had to serve the remainder of his sentence about 9 months, which he did in Winchester jail,I went to see him on several occasions, and Angie took his wife for visits. I took him back on when he was released and he got his wish to do European driving.
Here’s a photo of Ron “Basher” on a night out being led astray by Winky in Italy.

no wonder they stopped running that service if it took that long to cross the channel… sorry but couldn’t resist. I used to restock the Barfleur with duty free whilst on Mac Scott in the 90’s. We had a really weird low 3 axle rear steer trailer (owned by Britteny) to get under the car deck but the I don’t think the unit went uner anyway unless you went really fast?
They had an old freighter on that service as well but I forget the name, began with ‘C’ I think?
kerbut, thanks. yep that was it, a proper tub. On a par or worse than some of the older freighters sea-france ran out of dover in the early 90’s. I think I remember one called the Cezanne or similar. I stand to be corrected but I’m close.
