Hi Buzzer I remember Plested pies they were the BEST ! the gravy was lush ! They were in Winsor Terrace in town but are now in Shirley high street, in case you want another pie! But I’ll tell you now they ain’t what they were the gravy is like a jelly type but still tasty !
Was it the Lido you went swimming Buzzer I was a lifeguard there in 1976 when I came out the Navy and was a bit more fitter than I am now ! But it was I great job in the summer if you know what I mean!
Now I remember Lowmans used to have a place in Portswood too ( opposite where Wicks were )I think it’s still called Lowmans House, ( I think anyways ) Pat will know that’s his old stamping ground !!

Have a snicky feeling they also had a shop in East Street as well, or am I dreaming. Your right about the gravy Jim that’s what made the buggers so hot they would burn your tongue, JD.
Ahh I remember Lowmans we used to walk past the bakery every Saturday morning on our way to the ABC Broadway for Saturday morning pictures, Saturday evenijg there was always a queue of people buying upn the left over cakes etc!!
I used to go to the Old Swimming baths too some 50 years ago from school (Springhill by the Saints ground the Dell) was allowed to walk home from there to Bevois Valley! The baths were by the old power staion and when you went in there were seperate pools on left was for boys and right for girls, loads of coconut matting and the changing cubicles were pool side, with others up arouind a balcony! They pulled thosew two pools and just left the lido at the rear!!!

So Pat.You were an ABC Minor. How much did you have to pay to get in? I used to pay 4d or if one of my mates was in before me he used to go down and open up the emergency door and let us in.That gave me 4d for chips.Great days eh? Regards Charlie

A lot of Euro/Middle East photos on there, Brit. trucks but are they “borrowed” from here? I’d need to look at the M/E threads to know, all those Transcons etc.

Hi Gazzer, yep that’s where i saw it, there is one of Pat’s on there as well.
We’ve got “The Great British Bake off” , “Come Dine with Me” , “Baywatch” . and “Splash” all on this page who needs Sky ?
Remember Lowmans workshop at St Denys used to supply all the parts for their BMC FGK’s in the early 60’s.
I think nostalgia is a thing of the past
Happy New Year to everybody.

Richard
Hi Richard
I believe Brains Haulage took over the Lowmans Bakery workshops in Dukes Road when Ron Stillo bought them, by the way Les Slater and Ron’s son Colin(RIP) worked there.

i found this old pic today an old Southampton Dairy namely Brown and Harrisons of Northlands Road!
Who had a shop on the corner of Portswood Road and Highfield Lane (now traffic lights) in Portswood.
That were swallowed up by South Coast Dairies and who in turn became Unigate Dairies.
PS there was a Raeburn Dairies too in the area but I’m not sure who got them.
Raeburn Dairy was based in Hobb Lane,Hedge End Starting with bicycle & horse & cart deliveries in 1927 they expanded after the war with electric floats & Jowett Bradford vans.Their delivery area included large parts of Eastern Southampton. Owned by the Abraham family, the business closed in the early 80’s & the customer based passed to Co op Dairies. The site was redeveloped .

Hi Charlie
Yes I was an ABC Minor and remember the old movies and chase scenes well the hurray’s and boo’s were deafening!!
Also if it was your birthday you could stand up at the front barrier and the spotlight would pass across the row! You would also get a free ticket for the next week! They never checked some I used to have a lot more birthdays then
I think it was a tanner to get in, the same price as a bag of chips and you could get fish for a shilling!!!

Hi roolechat I can concur with what you say about Raeburn Dairy as I was chatting to the chap I get my haylage from in Durley today and all his milk used to go to them, he is in his seventies now and he said if it was hot in the summer they used to collect it twice a day from the farm to ensure freshness on delivery cheers Buzzer.

Southampton Public Baths (the Lido, the 2 indoor pools & the slipper baths ) were frequented by many a red blooded young lad interested in the opposite ■■■ however,as this is the Long Departed Southampton Haulier’s thread ,the most important view was not the skimpily adorned females lying on their towels absorbing the sun’s rays, but what was behind the Lido looking towards the Western Docks…the view over Southampton’s lorry park!
Generally empty during the day,as the afternoon progressed ,more & more vehicles would appear from all over the country to park for the night
Fergie has previously posted a Monty(?) photo of a SOM Albion parked on the lorry park which partially captures the era
