Who remembers these? Houghtons TransportRegards Pat
Hi Pat…, I remember them well. Run by Nigel Houghton and his wife Beryl from Wickham. I drove the 86 pictured sometime around '76 or '77. Strange to see it hauling a tilt as they only ever did flatbed or low loader work when I was with them , a mix of machinery and boat movements plus washing machines and stuff out of Havant. He also put 2 motors on for Calor Millbrook in the Winter hence the pet regs silencer in pic…
Their yard was on the A32 at Corhampton. As I recall they only had about 4 or5 trucks. I was on a container contract when the dockies went on strike and me and another driver ( Robin Bartlett ) got laid off without pay for the duration. Robin and I ,having mortgages to pay, opted to do a quick Lisbon in the meantime for Martin Lyon in two ex P.I.E. Dafs… What with breakdowns and days waiting for a backload we were away 12 days. When we got back the strike was over and me an Rob didnt have jobs so stayed on for Martin.
Another story I recall was, having pre loaded a Westerly yacht on the Monday I had instructions to meet the owner at 5 a.m. in the yard on Tuesday . He would then accompany me to London where the boat would be launched. I rocked up bright and early, but no sign of the owner. I waited 20 minutes and decided just to head on and 'Phone Nigel from Fleet as crane was booked for 10 o’clock ( no mobies obviously back then). About 45 minutes later when it started to get light, I noticed in the drivers mirror a fellah frantically waving from the boat! Apparently he had turned up in the middle of the night and taken it upon himself to get his head down on board…
I last saw Nigel about 10 years ago, not sure if he’s still in Transport now…
All the best, Baldrick.

Yes JD I did have a few different seats over the years! But am not worthy to be mentioned in the same sentence as T.I.R. Tone…The Daniel Craig of International Transport. Why that boy never got a Speedo modelling contract I’ll never know. ( Hi Mappo
)
It’s a great site this for jogging your memory and prompting debate. I had completley forgotten about the Houghtons days until seeing that photo that Pat put up. After thinking about that era I remembered doing a bit for Ken Brown in Portsmouth. I double manned with the Boss Man in his 89 taking a boat to Port Grimaud in about 1979.( give or take a year) He was a very monosyllabic man and the most he ever said was to tell me off for taking his beloved motor over 80 k’s! It felt like the longest trip ever…
An earlier memory was working for an outfit called Palmers of Ecchinswell, out the back of Newbury. The guv’nor was a farmer and he had diversified with 4 or 5 Akki Borderers…not a soufampton outfit but wondered if anyone remembers them…
Someting else I was thinking about. I remember Winkie Talman working for two brothers when he first got his licence…they had a small yard near the Bishops Waltham Country Club (Jeez I got some tales about that place too!! ) was it Treadwell or something. They had a Transcon as i recall…
Cheers, Balders.

Morning Balders i do remember Palmers and i think there motors were two tone blue,but cant recall the atki’s.as for Winky (he worked for me) for a while i think you may be thinking of the Creswells,does that ring a bell with you.Winky ended up with an F88 that they ran when he was an OD,one brother was called Robin and he used to do some night runs for me out of Pompy in the early 80’s taking Renault spare part trailers to Reading and later when they moved to Swindon.PS get them spuds in,cheerio for now Buzzer.
That’s right JD re Palmers …Blue n blue they was…
Robin Cresswell yes and his Brother was Ted… I remember now.
I think I’ve mentioned before , I was mates with Roy Talman when I moved down here from the smoke at 14…where does the winkie nickname come from, is that one of yours?? Not seen him for years…
I got Charlottes as couldn’t find Annabelles here. Wil get em in when this frigging snow stops… Cheers balders.
