At that time of night probably loads of witnesses and cctv, exonerating the driver.
I don’t get why 8w tippers are deemed to have some horrific blindspot, they’re no worse than a curtainsider. The problem comes when daft cyclists share the roads with idiots like Dennis Putz (Google him, quite a famous case).
No matter how many “safety devices” are put on a truck to try and cut down on these cyclists being killed you still won’t stop the brain dead on 2 wheels riding up the inside of a truck turning left or trying to squeeze through gaps you couldn’t fit a ■■■ paper between.
I had one a couple of week since on Harrow Road near the A40. Stopped at some lights at the side of a parked car in a parking bay, saw one of the Lycra brigade coming up in my mirror and proceed to nock the cars wing mirror off and ride off as he squeezed through the gap. He then went through a red light at a busy junction just down the road
The worst scheme ever invented was to allow people with not one ounce of road sense the availability to ride around one of the most congested city’s in the world without a single minuite of training or experience. How rather apt that the bikes are named after one of the most doseile MP’S we have in parliament, and people are saying he could be the next PM heaven help us
Why surprisingly? Arrests happen when the information gathered by the police warrant them, so far in this case it doesn’t. Not to say that it won’t at some time in the future when all evidence is collected. Unless your in the “they always arrest the trucker” camp, which is pish btw.
As for Boris you can think he’s an idiot if you wish, he’s mayor of one of the worlds biggest & well known cities, we drive lorries. Who’s the mug?
BillyHunt:
Given that these fatal incidents always seem to concern cyclists & tipper trucks, there was another last night in London, where does the problem lie? Putting aside all the anti cycling guff for once, what makes these vehicles seemingly always involved in fatals. Is it the design? Is it the type of driver? Is it the type of work? Is it the sheer volume of them around the capital? It’s not as if they are very small, quiet trucks is it.
We all know that transport companies will not refuse to deliver into the city centre, it just won’t happen so, as appealing as it is to the drivers, forget it.
Billy…not once in your post do you make mention of the cyclist possible faults. Other than telling us to stop being anti. Stand at any junction in Central London and you’ll see most cyclists putting themselves in danger. You’d think they had a death wish. They seem to assume that we have the same 360* vision they have.
@SteveBarnsley. I agree with what you say about the Lycra brigade, but as for Boris and his ‘dozy prat’ act, that’s all it is, an act. Although I did see him ride his bike the wrong way down a one-way street in the summer…
As a driver that cycles everyday I’m aware of the faults of cyclists only too well, I’ve warned many about the danger they are putting themselves in & that’s in & around Newcastle let alone London. But I stand by what I’ve asked which is: why is it always tippers?
I’m not telling you to stop being anti, that’s up to the individual, but a couple of bad ones don’t make them all bad, just like lorry drivers really.
In London you’ve got several tipper companies who employ drivers who’s driving skills are very questionable. Thames Materials (I worked somewhere where they bought some of their old trucks, what bags of ■■■■ they were), Keltbray*, Dohertys and Walshs’ spring to mind. Maybe when any lorry is involved in an incident, the drivers wage structure should be looked at. Have to say McGraths, Eriths and Sivyers’ seem a lot steadier in my experience.
*I’ve heard Keltbray referred to as “the bike squashers” around Oxford.

Just Googled Mr Putz,in my view the authorities have failed here, given his history two previous prison sentences for driving offences WTF were they thinking giving a canute like this his licence back.

And questions should’ve been asked of his employers recruitment process.

This is Sad, another one dies ! Perhaps cyclist training should be considered ?
The thing is it is but not for cyclist but for us .our lot are sending us two at a time on some course where we spend a day riding around London something to do with FORS
I think Boris should do his HGV test then head out in a truck on his own, no publicity, just a drive through the city, he may change his tune
it would certainly be a good idea for him to have a day in the passenger seat to see the problems, may be with some real experience he may come up with sensible ideas.
I don’t think that I would be too keen on doing a safety course involving riding around on a cycle myself, far too dangerous for me!
