London Parking Fines

Hi all, been done for parking in London, ran out of hours and could not get to next drop, found an out of the way place, not obstructing anyone. But work received a ticket and a fine for £60, now having it taken out of my wages!

Anyone else been caught out like this or like it?

Is this legal?

no it is not
all your boss can do is ask you to pay it back

I would fight it !!!

Its a bit unfair you are complying with the law regarding hours but by carrying this out you get a parking ticket

I’ve already agreed to pay it. I will learn by this and any timed deliveries will have to wait if i’m running the risk of going over my hours.

sound like your boss is called dennis Moore (MPFC circ1973)

I was at a site in london last month (I think) and was asked by their “appointed person” to park half on the curb (around the back in a sort of courtyard) so people could get past as there was a couple of skips the other side of the road. Made sense to me, especially seeing as it was a pavement which couldn’t really be used.

I got a ticket while being unloaded, £120 or £60 if paid in the first fortnight, think our guy on site had words with the boss and told him it wasn’t my fault though as I’ve never heard anything more. Well, it was friday the 13th :open_mouth: Usually, any fines are down to us to pay.

What really gets to me though is the conjestion charge, the bosses know where I’m going (usually building sites in london) and when but they want me to ring the secretary, who’s about 10 yards down the corridor to them as opposed to 180miles to me, to tell her to pay the congestion charge!! Unbelieveable!

Malcolm, it’s written in my contract that i’m responsible for fines of any sort
(unless arranged with customer at the time) and that they will deduct from wages.

Is that a legal contract-inclusion?

Its not unfair at all. He chose to park illegally. He could have looked for somewhere else whilst he had more time. To anyone with half a brain, they’d have realised early enough that they weren’t going to make it and act accordingly.

As for the deductions, if it is in the contract you signed, its legal as by signing, you’ve agreed to them.

To all those whinging about being caught at deliveries, it is up to YOU the driver to ensure you’re parked legally. If you can’t park legally at a delivery and are worried about being ticketed, don’t deliver there. Your employer cannot force you to drive illegally.

Exactly.
I make the office call. If the customer won’t pay the fine, can’t make a decision, or mumbles something like “we’ll look at it if it happens”
i’m out of there.

Robin what exactly is the fine for?.

How much would your boss be fined if he was late with the delivery?.

I never go in to London with less than 2 hours driving time I would recommend you do the same or have even more driving time if you can.

if your boss has paid the fine, then surely the fine was addressed to him and not you.
If he paid a fine on your behalf, then he hasn’t given you the chance to contest it… and you were going to , weren’t you?

Sounds simple but frankly it isn’t, think about it;

I deliver steelwork to our fitters out on site, if I don’t - the job doesn’t get done, three or four guys end up with nothing to do because I’m worried I MIGHT get a parking ticket!? And I’ve just driven best part of 200miles to get there, you’re having a laugh - what would your boss say to that? I know what mine would - every single little mistake I’ve ever made would come out and I’d be down the road, he’d hit the bloody roof! And who’d blame him.

And the same goes for everyone I should think, we do what we do because someone, somewhere needs something and any employer would see them not getting that something as us not doing our job - rightly or rongly it doesn’t matter.

Good point.
I’m contesting a London bus lane fine right now. The office handed it to me,
it was my choice to pay the £60 or to fight it with the possibility of loosing and paying £120…or winning the case.

They always give us the opportunity to choose.

Would your company pay it if you got one? If not then you’ve got ever right not to go there.

well, I see what you mean, but my point was I’d probably end up without a job because of it, they’d just use any other mistakes I’ve made in the past to give them a valid reason for letting me go.

No offence intended mrpj, I just see it a bit differently to you.

No, I can see your point. It’s an underhand thing for your employer to do but I understand paying a fine is better than losing a job.

Reading the posts on here it makes me wonder just how many of us are prepared to break laws to “get the job done”. (although the first post wasn’t strictly about getting the job done)
One of our customers is up a one way street and the only way to get on the laoding bay is to go the wrong way up the street, Plenty of our drivers are prepared to go the wrong way, with hazards on etc to deliver.
I don’t.
After bringing to load back twice my boss doesn’t send me anymore.
I can understand risking getting fixed penalties if the boss is prepared tp pay but can’t accept that I might get points just to do the job.
How many of us risk fines on a daily basis?

I bet we have all done it, the little bit extra to get the job done whether that means tipping off the card, taking 15 minute break at the diesel pump and another 30 minutes while waiting for the paperwork.

Now it seems as though we have to pay to go to work, first it starts with paying for the tacho cards, ok not strictly tacho cards but a digital chip. Drivers are expected to pay to park the bosses truck and guard it overnight. They pay to customize it and now they are paying parking fines for him. What next? Fuel?

Having said that, if you park illegally or drive through a red light, the boss can hardly be blamed for that.

you’ve got a point wheelnut, most of us can’t be doing with an ear bashing or whatever so, understandably, we bend the rules a bit to keep everyone happy - mostly ourselves! But it would be nice if the bosses would cough up for us going that extra mile now and then. As it happens, I was lucky enough to have one of his brown nosers on site with me
