One of my colleagues was given a fine for driving his 26tonner down the A3220 onto Chelsea Embankment a few weeks ago. We have the permits required for pre 7am etc and know about the weight limit off the A4 onto ECR becore 6am. He said it was after 6am that he turned off the A4 onto the A3220. He said there’s a weight limit “where Embankment starts”■■ I use this route and I’ve never seen one, and like other colleagues, never had a problem. Are we lucky, is he unlucky or did he actually take a different road down to Embankment?
This morning, he told me he’s now got a fine for accessing Hayes (Bromley) from J4 of the M25 and then using the A21. Either he’s trusting his 2 sat navs too much or has been unlucky as I’ve used the route described to get to Hayes too (although I tend to have a 15 at Cobham on the way down).

With regard to the first part… several years ago, I got a ticket for being on the A3220 before 6am, or so we thought… In actual fact what happened was I’d come off the A4 bang on 6am (as usual) and at the bottom you bend left to go onto the Embankment (which is actually Cremorne Road) … There is a camera to the right of that bend on Ashburnham Road, which iirc has a weight limit on it… As I’d taken up all of my lane to get round the left bend (in an artic) it had triggered that camera and that’s how I got the ticket… my mate and I had 6 tickets between us in a fortnight from the same camera, as we were running through to construction sites in the city.
Our office appealed, gave our routes and tracker data, and all 6 tickets were cancelled.
Cheers Kate, I’ll pass that info on as we have trackers on our newer vehicles; The driver concerned has a 14 plate so it should be working. Some of us have asked for dash cams because of the dubious tickets some have had. Although those of us who use maps are ticket free.
