We all know what the downsides of the lockdown are, either over already or ongoing, jobless or working flat out.
What are the UPsides though?
There must likely be some, even if it is for the hallowed few who moved their money and attentions to the right places at the right time, mothballing a business otherwise about to fall over, getting rid of staff it would normally be impossible to have got rid of in former “Normal” times.
The problem when things DO get back to normal however, is that you have to train a load of very keen yes, but also very inexperienced NEW staff, some of which have never seen a pump truck, order issue system, or even payslip before this whole “crisis” happened…
Some people will be retiring rather than returning to work. They’ll need to be replaced, probably by elder staff coming back from furlough early, or maybe like in my case - transfered sideways from somewhere else, having never gone on furlough at all.
Other folks will attempt to gain promotion on some kind of “warehouse to wheels” programme. Not seen much evidence of that of late though. Firms surely don’t want to be telling people how to drive, but would rather take an experienced driver who is just new to that particular work environment at the different firm… Eg. Courier work to Pallet work to Special loads to General Haulage to Containers to Farm Work to Hazard Loads…
We all might move a notch or two around a big wheel that now rotates when it wasn’t doing so before…
