what i do wish somobody would do though is maps for shopping centre deliveires
we dont do many so cant ask other drivers
but take trafford centre they have about 4 access gates. and all you have is clinton cards trafford centre as an address. then have to google and phone ask what gate you in thats if you even even phone the store direct.
and few centres been to you get to the area then theres passage way.s lifts there all the same just grey concrette passage ways all look the same easy to get lost. why they cant make maps or put some maps on the wall where each shop is i dont know.
that would be usefull
As 75% of our work is new build industrial or housing estates using a postcode is pretty pointless. Golden rule is phone the customer for best way in.
The deliveries that are established, then google maps 99.99% of the time will get me there.
I certainly would not pay to use a service to get me to a delivery.

… and you haven’t noticed that it’s free.
It’s fine that you don’t like the idea, and that you have lots of reasons why it’s useless. But I don’t think that will help anyone here. Why don’t you let the ones that think this might be useful try it out, and keep a nice and positive tone on this forum?
How will the snowflakes cope without this database, why not just grow a pair, put on ya big boy pants and use your initiative, if this wasn’t removed when you got your Lgv licence.

In all my years of driving, I have only ever had 2 postcodes that took me to the door.
I google maps every job before I go there.
What sort of work have you been doing? Or are all of your office staff dyslexic? A postcode covers an individual street, or only sections of it if it is a big enough street. When I was on fuel work all I had to do was type in the postcode, and after a few days the satnav even learned to pinpoint the petrol stations on that street.

I think it is a great idea, however you will have to make it chargeable as your workload will be vast as it grows.
I like the idea too, but this ^. I started something similar (https://imgur.com/a/yVjmOp5). Just getting thousands of places added is basically a second job, then updating them when they change. Even if you get other people to add them, you’d have to check them. Deal with people who dispute the accuracy. Or people who write personal attacks (eg. the person at Goods In is a…). Or the companies themselves.
Personally if I wanted to provide the best information I would create a wiki with some good page templates and categories so that any extra can be laid out easily. (Eg. a base template, a sub template for opening times, a sub template for routes in, a sub template for required PPE, etc. and categories for postcode areas {ie. BS11 and BS11 8}). Then you could also easily expand to other things like overnight parking or fuel stations. But again, too much work, not enough return.
Also the what3words is a sideshow. Once you have the long/lat you can automate the conversion to nearest postcode, what3words, Google’s Plus Codes, grid reference, a link to Google Street View, a link to Bing maps, etc. It’s getting the accurate long/lat that’s the problem.

… If the trucknetuk.com form operators are up for it, …
Not really, but we’re quite good at spotting unauthorised adverts.
A read of the forum rules is advised.
Sweet Jesus. Where are the adverts?
I think I’m pretty much done with trucknetuk.com. The vitriol is strong, the and the mistrust even worse.
Looks like the “senior” members know it all, and have to make that felt strongly. BTW - I’m 59, and I got my Class 1 38 years ago.
Have a nice life everyone. I’m done here.
BobHP - great work you have done here, and I can see how much work this can become. Maybe I’ll pursue this just within my company as it will be a limited set of destinations, and the transport office can take it on in the long run. I’ve lost the will to dedicate time just to be accused of unauthorised advertising.

Your thoughts are appreciated.
It would appear that is not the case.
When you asked for members thoughts did you expect them all to be positive if you did that was a little naïve.
My old postcode covered 2.5 miles between a church and a motorway junction, my current postcode covers just 14 dwelling houses and there are only two places that have the same street name in the UK.
Many times a buyer will use the company postal address rather than the delivery entrance address, after all that’s the one the supplier needs to send the invoice.
I understand what the OP is trying to do but it would be a mammoth task, as already pointed out, a different delivery gate for a tanker or a curtainsider, bulk tipper or canteen delivery.

I guess everyone here has their problems finding locations for pick-ups and drop-offs. Sometimes the postcodes you get are plain wrong, sometimes the centre of the postcode is a mile from where the warehouse is …
There are days when I waste an hour easily to find my destinations, and it’s getting on my nerves.
I was wondering if there is an appetite for drivers on this forum to contribute to a database of destinations, e.g. the company name, the postcode they give you, and the real location as longitude and latitude and what3words shortcut, and maybe the odd comment on how to do things there?
This should save lots and lots of time, as you can just look up where you go to, and have the database send you a text message with the coordinates etc., that you can then use to send to your navi (my Garmin can take a location from my3words from a text message).
I’ve attached a screenshot with some sample locations so everyone can see what the data will look like.
A big problem will of course be choosing who can enter data, as if the data is dodgy, it will do more harm than good. In the sample data, the exact location is always set for the entry gate.
Technically not a big deal, and I already have written a working application with its own database that can send the location data to a mobile. I have to pay a good £0.19p per text as the messages are over 160 characters, so it’s in reality 2 text messages. So there would be a charge if you want the data sent to your mobile, and it could be free if you just copy the location data from the screen.

Bloody good idea. However you want to sell it to the sat nav wallahs not drivers.
The biggest issue is keeping up to date with firms changing names. You can soon populate a database but it would be handy to have it a bit more site specific stuff like artics reverse in, rigids drive in etc. Knowing this stuff in advance would make new deliveries less stresfull.
