Local work vs Distance work

Just curious what everyone on here prefers, I myself worked round the south of Ireland for over a year tramping all week doing local work and I couldn’t go back to it now I’m doing further afield, i.e. English work/Europe now. I couldn’t imagine doing about 20 drops a day in a rigid but then most people probably don’t have the mindset of “the further away the better” like I do these days.

I do 2x locals or 1x distance per day.

Suits me

The further the better, provided I don’t have to get a boat or train, (Standard national O-Licence).

I spent a lot of money learning to visit several postcodes a day!

I don’t mind a couple of local drops if it’s at the end of a trip and I’m getting home. Doing them day in day out would bore me to tears.

The further the better, it’s trucks we drive not busses or taxis.

A.

Prefer distance but not averse to the odd local now and then.

the clue is in the job occupation.driver,
too many variations on the job nowadays with rdc 24/7 operations.
never in a million years could i go back to multidrop,or tail lift round the doors stuff.and certainly not rdc treated lke dogturd work.
but once again, everyone will have their own reasons for doing what job they do,the way they do it whether by choice or circumstance.
for me a job like andrew g is close to perfection and better than a happy medium.
away for a week long haul,on the cruise all day and home for a cpl days in the sun…

AndrewG seems to have the job worked out, could get used to his set up alright but I’m happy with my 2 weeks away and 45 at home for the time being

Day work for me, never been happier.

Early starts 95% of the time, one longish run or two shorter trips, some days only do about 7 hours, others 9 to 13, seldom does it go over 13, but its transport crap happens.

Blower tank so no bloody RDC’s = no jumped up bloody clerks, mostly we deal with storemen most of whom are sound.

I used to love doing ultra-long-distance continental work but I largely knocked it on the head when my kids were born. I always thought I’d go back to it when they were grown up, which they have now, but the world is a very different place nowadays and to be honest my heart isn’t in it any more anyway so I just do the same run every day, 80 miles each way and I spend more time sitting in the cab while I’m being tipped than I do driving. As I’ve mentioned elsewhere I only work for six months a year and view work purely and simply as a way of building up my savings so I can go off again.

Either , provided I don’t have to go inside M25 to often :imp:

Where I am now everyday of the week can be a work or rest day. So sometimes it’s day work relatively local, a week away or up to 3 weeks around Europe.

That suits me just fine.

nowadays its neither but both…road maintenance living in “mobile” camps about the province could be an hr from home or 9/10hrs like this year.Work at one spot for months or a week then hook up and move to the next quarry/deserted farmyard

Tbh, i dropped onto my current route more by luck. Many drivers at my place dont like the Malaga-Calais return. Ill do it week in week out but in all honesty it does get to me occasionally and need a break from it. Its done on the understanding that if i need to do a shorter run the following week another driver is available on the rota to do it which works out ok

Working days, locals are defiantly my preference. Can’t be doing with the stress of being sent miles away and then worrying about getting back through the M6 chaos etc. for a decent time.

Some weeks I only do around 500km all week and that suits me just fine!

distance for me as its a 48 mile round trip home everyday so works out better for me.may get back near yard tip do a local job then back down road that afternoon or early evening

I do day work and do local to middle distance, suits me down to the ground. Usually end up with a delivery and a couple of collections on local and a delivery and collection on longer runs, generally start 6am and do 12 hour days. Longer runs at our place are left to the trampers

Distance but runs when I get home every day. Nice to have the odd longer one to the further reaches of the British Isles with a night out now and again and also a bit of local work to break it up.

Prefer nights though so I get to do distance usually around 400-450 mile round trips and see my bed every day.

I prefer distance, the more driving time the better.

Local.
My idea of local though is anything that doesn’t involve a night out.

Would love to try trunking but most of the companies I’ve considered joining do not pay nearly enough to make it worthwhile.
E.g. I’d have to make my own food to take with me due to MSA being stupidly expensive and if I get the urged to use them which I know I will then I’ll be out of pocket.

I agree slowlane, 9/10 hours a day and as close to the 90 hour fortnight driving, keep er lit tang
