Local knowledge Nether Stowey to Tiverton

Anybody local, or familiar with this route.
I tipped Nether Stowey Somerset on A39 Bridgwater to Minehead road the other day, next drop Bampton.
What is the best route to Bampton (near Tiverton) would you reckon.

Is the A39 to Marsh Street (Minehead road) then the A396 to Tiverton route ok for an artic, it looks a bit twisty on the map, any impossible bends?
It does look the most direct route on the map.
Not bothered if it’s a bad road as such, but is it actually passable and possible. I know it’s an A class route, but a lot of roads in those areas are like B class.

Chickened out in the end, could not get a definite answer from anybody, so went back in to Bridgwater and picked up the M5.
Just curious for when I am there again.
Cheers.
(Don’t waste your time or mine, by coming back and telling me to buy a 300 quid truck sat nav btw

I do the farm shop at over stowey ,if it was me I’d go back via Greggs on the Ind est and even back to dunballs wharf depending on the time of day and down the motorway ,but may be one of these jerk offs that can’t drive with out a truck sat nav will say different .

Is that the same as Nether Stowey?

Yeh that’s what I did Dan, but I was curious if the roads that I mentioned were artic friendly.
Have you used them yourself ?..if so what do you reckon.

Nether stowey and over stowey next to each other ,I did a building site at watchet too ,not used the road you mentioned though ,I navigate by Greggs ,cafes ,and pubs ! Ooh and lorry scrap yards .

Not entirely familiar with all of that route, but I recon that by the time you have reached the A396, you’d be back through Bridgewater and halfway down the M5. The A396 is an A road in much the same way that the A350 south of Shaftesbury is an A road, but much longer… themthar lands, the shorrtest rooohte is usually not the quickest. Unless I had a few hours to kill, and fancied a scenic trip, I always double back to the M5 and A361.

Just to add, I thought it was a 17-ton limit on A396 at Dunster. It’s basically only wide enough for single file traffic as well. Avoid.

There are routes over the hills but to be honest mate time you’ve gotten half way there , you’d have arrived quicker going the motorway , I used to run article bulk blowers round that area, none of the routes are artic friendly most are unclassified roads / lanes , to be honest they’re more aggravation than they’re worth

Thanks for the advice lads, I was down there again earlier and went back via Bridgwater, looks like I’ll continue doing so.
Cheers.

If you’re going down there regular Rob you could give the old A361 a go

Come of M5 at Taunton, round Taunton then pick up the B3227 ( which used to be the A361 )

takes you straight to Bampton. Thats if there is no weight limits now, It certainly aint boring    .

We used to be up and down there all the time back in 1977 :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth: .Just got me class 1 then.

Used to take the veneer from Aaronson brothers Rickmansworth when it closed. Down to their new factory at South Molton

Wouldnt use any roads other than motorway very twisty road to Bampton and as you approach cars parked all over the place can be quite tight going through village best advice M5 A361 Tiverton Bypass then turn right at the roundabout and go in that way. Would probably be quickest as well.

I half remember these roads from a few years ago and agree back to Bridgwater and down the M5 unless your driving a puddle jumper of course. Your certainly saving mileage going cross country but not time .
