Llanelly Steel wagons were a darkish red colour. They were based at Kington where the drivers lived. The owner was from Bilston.
Cheers Dave.

Thats great thanks, is there any other companies that are the same-ish colour that i can get the shade off? Also what coluor was the chassis and sign writing?
Thanks

You have asked me something now Rich, its over 40 years since they ran. The chassis was black and I think the signwriting was a type of yellow, I think.
Cheers Dave.

Thanks, Ill take a trip to halfords at the weekend! If there are no colour images, I cant be told its wrong!

One of the drivers in the pic lent me the photo. I will try and remember to ask him over the weekend. I will also ask the other driver in the pic if he has any photo’s.
Cheers Dave,

that would be great thanks!

I am not familiar with Llanelli Steel, but most of the first 1418’s which came here in 1966/7 where Mercedes Red, yes that is it’s correct name. It was the colour that early Mercedes racing cars were painted until they changed to German Grand Prix White after the merger with Benz, Silver came much later. A number of operators who bought those trucks adopted the colour because firstly it was a good colour and secondly it was such a novelty in 1966 to buy a new truck in a proper finsh rather than primer it seemed a pity, not to mention a waste of money to flat it down.

Masons used to have Mercedes Red on their standard colour chart and Glasurit did one almost correct called Deep Crimson. There is a Wine Red on recent Mercedes commercials factory colour options which is a bit darker and in my view not as good a colour; Mercedes Red is one of those very deep colours you think you could measure.

If you go on www.craftmasterpaints.co.uk when the front page opens you will see a selection of colours, click on the 4th one down in the left hand column, that is Mercedes Red.

Thanks, thats quite a nice shade, it would look good with the yellow lettering!

acd1202 is probably right about Llanelly Steel only ran three wagons at a time, if it was red, that would be near enough for them.
Cheers Dave.

Hi Rich,
I have just spoken to Andrew Stokes one of the drivers on Llanelly Steel, and he confirms yellow signwriting. He’s the one in the specs who was one its regular drivers.
Cheers Dave.

Great stuff, thanks!
