Liverpool tomorrow - where to stop?

Is ‘The Hollies’ still going?

M6 J12 East on A5, about half mile on the left, or a bit further on the old ‘Coronation’ Cafe on the right. (Yes I know it changed its name years ago, but I’m an old driver).

Does anyone remember that TV play ‘Dogfood Dan and the Carmarthen Cowboy’? Most of the action in that was filmed at the Coronation.
For those who have never heard of it, it centred on 2 trunkers travelling between Hull and Carmarthen every day one up one down. One lived in Hull and the other Carmarthen. They used to meet for a meal in the cafe every day each recounting tales of their regular ‘knock offs’ in each others cities. Both wives were, they both believed, as pure as the driven snow. I’m sure you can guess the punchline  .

Bon appetit et bon voyage Toytown,

Salut, David.

This may be bit late for you, but allow plenty of time if you are driving through Liverpool. The place is just one big roadwork at the moment with all the attendant traffic jams.

Oh dear, gone downhill has it? Why is that then? Has the old Coronation closed again, leaving no competition?

Salut, David.

Thanks all for your input ::slight_smile:

Hollies: Last time I wnet there, around a year ago it was filthy & seemed to be frequented more by the local down & outs than drivers … it was a Sunday though. Coffee was absolutely disgusting & when I bought a Tea to replace it, that was like milky water that had a teabag waved near it :frowning:

Well, we’re home now after a round trip of 431 miles

Went in one shot from home to Stafford services & decided to take a MOTO break for toilets & a coffee, the place was immaculate & we decided that brekkies could be done there (forget the cost but it didn’t make me fall over).

Left Stafford & got as far as Sandbach where we had a kip fo an hour, then buzzed up to Liverpool for 9:15am

Leaving L’pool I decided I didn’t fancy the M6 & came over windy hill, partly because Donna’s brother lives near Halifax & we could go & pester him for an hour.

All in all a wasted day because i saw nothing I wanted to buy, but a day out all the same

thanks again for all your replies

because i saw nothing I wanted to buy

OK! OK! You’ve all convinced me  .
Won’t be going there next time back.
But still nobody’s brought me up to date on the Coro.

Salut, David.

Couple of months ago I was passing the M6/A5 junction in the car. Had heard a rumour Hollies was closed down so went down to check. It was open. I used to use this place last year & agree with the comments above: The food is less than average & the place is absolutely filthy…for insance, look under the counter. yuk!

I then looked further along the road as I’d heard there was another stop, (The Coronation?) but didn’t know exactly whewre it was…even though i’ve walked as far as the pub a few times from The Hollies.
It seemed to be open also.

Can’t remember for sure but I think it was about half a mile on the right hand side from the Hollies towards Cannock. Nowhere near as big a truck park though.

Yes, that’s right David. Maybe i worded it poorly above, when i said “It also appeared to be open” i was refering to this other Truck Stop, not to the pub lol.

I did & wish I hadn’t bothered

I usually get them from Southampton, more often than not from a friends guvnor (importer) direct, with the occaisional lookaround the import auctions there. Thistime I decided to take a trip up to L’pool to see what was in there & I can only compare it with Tilbury or Bristol – Lots of unloved car being sold for what appears to be cheap, but in reality is not much less than I sell a good one for !!

Another wasted day, but we have to try don’t we
