I’m referring to the farmhouse that sits inbetween the M62. If you’re familiar with the area as I’m sure most of you are, the tale that accompanies why it is where it is, is quite a famous one around the north west and goes like this: When they were building the M62 the farmer refused to sell the land to the developers so they instead, built around the farm and cottage. So it sits inbetween the east and west bound carridge ways.
However, listening to the radio yesterday has put the tale well and truely to bed. It turns out that there is a geological fault line beneath the house which meant it was safer to go around rather than through the farm. A bit of useless motoring trivia for ya.
I love dispelling that myth whenever people mention it. I’m not really sure how it’s still going TBH, the geological information has been available for a long time. If you’re interested, search YouTube for videos on constructing the M62. Some fascinating old footage on there. I particularly like the bridge. One day I’ll walk over it.
Yes, the reason for it being there is geological. In any event, I doubt the farmer would have been able to refuse to sell the land, the Government would have just put a CPO on it.
I heard that story when I was a kid joining my uncle on trips to the north east, I found out the real story many years ago but it’s just not as exciting is it?
The farmer who had the next farm down was also opposed to the new motorway. Old man Turner, who hated all the noise, put a tanoy loudspeaker system on his roof, and played music at full volume to " get his own back " on the motorway.
I know this one is not a myth, I worked at Ripponden and District at the time and met the Turners a few times.
Regards. John.
