Coming from the south
Is it best to go A1m then onto the A64 around York then up past Pickering to get to Whitby
Or the longer looking route of keep gong up the A1m until Middlesbrough then cut along the A66 / A171 or any other suggestions ( rigid vehicle )
Thanks I know Whitby is a bit out on a limb done it coming from the north before but never approaching from the south .

Pickering looks the most direct but unsure of how decent a road it is .

Via Pickering all day long. I traverse that route regularly for motorsport purposes.
The A171 has a rather steep bank on it just outside Guisborough.

That’s the one. Never had a problem getting up it in a wagon. Actually, tell a lie, I have, but it was when I first came up here and didn’t know what I was doing dragging 20ft boxes over the moors. Only got that embarrassed the once, though.
There was. however, the time I blocked the “not suitable for HGVs” route between Shaftesbury and Blandford with a fridge…

Pickering route is the quickest and most direct. I tend to go that way, then come back across the 171 to Guisborough, then 172 to Stokesley, then across to the A19 and down, just to mix it up a bit. Takes a little longer, but can generally be flat out all way back to the A19 once out of Whitby.
Thanks for the help guys , needed to night out ( not a lay by bunny ) so went past the A64 and done my night out in Wetherby services (£££££££ 31 rip off ) next morning early doors set off back down A1 to the A64 and took the Pickering route to Whitby dark most of the way until getting close to Whitby then witnessed a lovely sunrise , tipped then nice and light and savoured the delights of the Pickering route all the way back to the A1, as people said lovely drive .

Not for the faint hearted if you don’t know what your doing.
Mind you, I have gone up Sutton Bank in a Stralis, and that was bad enough.
