lights........

A lot of cars now have HID headlight that have a fire up voltage of 20000 volts then settle down to a standard 80 volts draw.

Can you imagine the amount of fried lady drivers at the side of the of the M1 if they tried to change a headlight bulb.

Manufacturers should be prosecuted if a headlight bulb cant be changed by a three year old with a sore finger.Bloody ridiculous that it costs over a hundred quid to change a side light bulb on an a series merc.

What?
The Customer side of the circuit is a standard 13.8v - what the hell is “standard 80v draw” ?
The lamp side of the Ballast produces about 15kv to draw the arc across the electrodes but then produces approx 100v to maintain the light output.
If a vehicle is equipped with HID headlamps then it is mandatory to have auto headlamp levelling and headlamp washing system.
The HID units last approx 4 times longer than halogen bulbs. Even if a failure did occur then no one is going to try and change a HID at the side of the road, people don’t even attempt to change Halogen bulbs.

Pressure across the line is 80 v dont you understand ■■■■■ english and it dont matter if they last 4 times or 400 times as long they are going to blow and can some muppet like you change a bulb.I doubt it.And what the hell has self leveling got to do with it plant pot.Jesus!.

a driver once told me that you need to tilt the cab on an XF DAF to change the headlight bulbs…
NO YOU DON’T…
I showed him that it could be done in two minutes without tilting…

I drive a new XF, and apparently if a headlight goes she needs to go back to Daf to have it changed. There are two bulbs in each headlight so the chances of two blowing at the same time are pretty slim hopefully.

When it happens all 4 have to be replaced too.

Probably better to trade it in and buy a merc then¬!!!

You class that as English?
I was quoting the law, not what you can fit yourself from Halfrauds or buy off eBay.
Pressure? If you are going to try and be smart then it’s actually Potential Difference.
Stop being such a mardarse with the insults, muppet that can’t change a bulb?

Rant alert!

OK, I work nights (irrelevant) and I am aware that if I take out a vehicle with a faulty light I am quite likely to get pulled by the nice Vosa people and reminded that it is naughty to do such a thing, and they are likely to ask for a contribution to their coffers. So, like all (most) drivers it is something I understand to be part of my job and make sure all lights work as they should.

So WHY WHY WHY are there so many cars on the road with :
headlights that point to the sky, are set to illuminate roadside forests, only one working, one stuck on main beam, aligned to light up the mirrors of a truck. designed to aid incoming aircraft, or seemingly don’t work at all etc etc.

I reckon there must be 50% or more of cars with faulty lights, if you fined them all £100 then you could clear the national debt.

Are car drivers now exempt from any legalities regarding headlights.

And breathe…

Ken.

Well it’s a fact, HID equipped vehicles have to have self levellers and washers.

Last week driving home from work I had a car on full beam behind me. I flashed my fog lights a few times and nothing. Oh well.

A mile or so on came to a stop at a set of lights and took the opportunity to talk to the driver behind.

His reply was “I know, they are the only ones left that work” :imp:

^^^ Oh dear, what’s the world coming to■■? I wonder how long he’s going to continue like that?? Until MOT is due no doubt??

Does my head in!!!

I love people who go “Well it’s a fact”!!

New build cars have to have Self leveling systems and headlight washers. They also have to be working for the MOT.

However if you fit them as a modification to a car that didn’t leave the factory with them, you don’t have to fit the self leveling or headlight washing systems!

Bking:
And what the hell has self leveling got to do with it plant pot.Jesus!.

It is a legal requirement to have self levelling headlights if you have HIDs and if you don’t your car will fail a MOT as its a testable item. A lot of those kits on Ebay aren’t legal to use because they’re not self levelling.

Uh-oh. Here we go again…

I always thought the V in VOSA stood for vehicle. Has anyone ever seen them pull or check a car. Trucks are just the easy option for them. If they started parking up defective cars until they fix the fault, maybe the car drivers would make more of an effort instead of waiting until the next MOT.

Had to change a O/S headlight bulb on my 2005 astra over the weekend… So [zb]difficult to do a simple job

I watched a neighbour over the course of two hours dismantle his Renault to change a bulb. He still had to take it to the garage to get it re-aligned correctly.

Even my Mk2 Mondeo needs the light re-aligning after a bulb change. ■■■■■■■ ridiculous :smiling_imp:

I would wager that a lot of wagon drivers with blown bulbs will actually know about it, but couldn’t be arsed sorting it out prior to leaving the yard in a bid to get going. I have seen ‘x bulb out’ in many a defect book & it’s still out when I get to it.

Professionals and all that…
