Lighting Regulations advice

Hi,

Can someone point me in the right direction please.

I’ve some LEDS and a lightbar on the front of my regular drive and want to add some more (boss has said he’ll weigh in for them as long as it looks decent) I know the powers that be get queer about blue and it has to be white at the front orange at the side and red to the rear but my question is.

Can I put orange and green on the front? Also where do I stand with purple?

One more, where do I stand with lights in the cab and on the steps?

you are allowed any colour you like on the front, apart from red, BUT, the factory fit marker lights MUST BE WHITE!!!

if you want lights on the steps, then fit them

any LED marker lights or light bars that you fit are classed as auxiliary lighting, and, as such, do not come under the VOSA remit

You can have any colour except red showing to the front, and you can only have red showing to the rear (with exceptions for warning lights, reversing lights, side markers, interior lights etc). You may not fit anything which is (or which has the appearance of) a blue warning beacon, nor may you fit any flashing lights. Whatever you fit must not cause undue dazzle etc to other road users. Apart from that, it’s pretty much up to you. Although there are much cheaper ways to have “Look at me - I’m a gullible knob” displayed on the firm’s motor if that’s what floats your boat

My godson is a copper and according to him blue leds are fine as long as they arnt in place of factory fit lights/side lights and that they dont flash. Only a tool would put red ones on the front.

the only colour you can’t have facing forward is red, the only things the regs say is that basically other colours must not resemble emergency vehicles, ie blue or green which was added recently but you have to read the regs carefully to find that bit, now its down to interpretation of those regs, that is if you have X number of blue or green lights over the front it could be mistaken for an emergency vehicle, and that’s were the problem comes.
orange to the front I can’t see a problem with. would be worth reading this if you feel so inclined

How does taking pride in the lorry make me a “gullible knob”? If I was spending my money then yeah I can see that, but I’m not.

Thanks for the advice all.

Sorry - it’s just the age-old thing where gaffers keep the (lowly paid) workers happy by providing them with a bit of shiny bling instead of actually paying a bit more. For some reason it seems to be very prevalent in transport - I can’t honestly recall ever seeing a blinged-up supermarket till, FLT, agricultural tractor etc or a fireman proudly showing off his upmarket wellies. If the gaffer is really willing to stump up a couple of hundred for some fancy lights etc to keep you onside, why isn’t he putting that in your pay packet?

Taking a pride in ones workplace/tools by looking after it/them/the vehicle is laudable - but that’s not the same thing as fitting all sorts of “look at meeee!” bling, fancy lights etc. But as I said - if it floats your boat then go for it!

I’ll take the cash please. I don’t want shiny bits, just a decent motor and money in my pocket.

The couple hundred quid worth of lights adds up to about 60 quid for some half decent LEDS off ebay.

Having come from an agricultural background I assure you there are plenty of blinged up tractors out there, it starts with a second beacon (that adds 20 horsepower apparently) then they add 2 CB twigs (completely pointless unless they’re 11ft apart)

I cant complain at my wage, it’s more than enough, especially when you consider nights is paid by the shift and it’s job and finish (usually do about 4 hours)

The lorry is plenty decent enough, it could be newer but it’s a tipper I don’t expect it to be brand new.

The bloke himself couldn’t be fairer or more decent, my only moan is my CB is crap, but i’ll spring for a new mike and that’ll solve it.
