Light pallets secured by only ratchet straps

Hello everyone,

My question is do light pallets have to be up against bulkhead or is it enough if they are strapped down using ratchet straps on a curtainsided trailer? Would they be deemed unsafe in the eye of the law if they weren’t?

A pallet would be maximum 50-60 kg. I am talking about those foldable pallet boxes filled with cardboards and plastics to be recycled.

thanks in advance!

Can you provide 100% restraint against forward movement. Probably not, so probably yes.
Why not avoid an argument and stick it against the bulkhead or is walk to the end too much effort?

It’s multi drop delivery job where we collect recycling and empty pallets after tipping the goods. So at the second drop after the goods pallet tipped the empty pallets and recycling will have to move forward to stop against forward movement?
It’s about convenience for the drivers, no argument involved in this case.

Can you stand a pallet on edge in front of the pallet boxes and cross brace with straps.

That should be safe enough but I have to say I don’t know how the DVSA view these things these days.

50 kgs per pallet? That is light.
That could easily be shoved along the floor up to headboard , even with no pallet truck. Depends on how many but easier and quicker to do that rather than using extra straps.

Years back when did mutrdrop work trying keep weight even was a pain.
Espacailly when loaded in wrong order you get to drop there loads in the middle once that’s gone you then have a gap between your next drops.
Some forklift drivers are friendly enough will move a couple of pallets for you.
Always best asking them.
End of the day just do the best you can to stay as legal as possible

Its not about an argument here, but if challenged by the TM or enforcement. Paraphrasing what some others have said. If you look at and you could do a bit more, then perhaps that’s what needs to be done.

I wonder if anyone here can guess why I am glad to be long retired. What with eyes on you both inside and outside the cab, what is left to be a real professional these days?

Use dunnage to fill the space between the empty pallets and the bulkhead. A nice big pipe would do (see pic)
