Light out on trailer

It’s not just marker lights - it’s any one of the minor jobs that most of us would do as a matter of course.

The answer to the OP is that it all depends on whom you work for. Those of us in general haulage would be expected to do these things. Drivers on continental work would probably be expected to do much mors like changing a wheel or an air bag, but those who work for the multi national “logistics” operators have to work to a set of rules designed down to the lowest common denominator.

When i worked for Halfords it was a disciplinary offence to leave the yard with any bulb not working, and we were not allowed to fix them ourselves; so we had to wait up to an hour for the garage to send a fitter to do the job. A driver who worked for the same agency as me was reported by the gateman when he left with a side marker not working. An hour down the road he was phoned and told to come back, and then he was suspended three days. If a bulb blew on the journey then you were supposed to get it fixed at the nearest shop.

hiya, from one harry to another yes i said 1970s instead of 1972 i did know of the later vote to which i voted NO as did just about everybody i know and it’s not only my theory that vote was doctored to suit the government of the day. thanks harry long retired.

There’s a mountain of differences from what we voted for in the 70’s, to what we got today. We joined a European Economic Community. It was supposed to co-operate, which it did. Without the voter getting another word in, the barstewards have turned it into European Union. 99% of what happens now isn’t even in the hands of our politicians, never mind the people.

Countries gone to pot and we’re all Doooomed.

What on Earth is the world coming to when an HGV driver cannot change a bulb for himself?

You’ve only your own generation to blame for the H&S police. I’d have no problems replacing a bulb, but I won’t do it unless I’ve been shown how to properly…that way I keep my own arse covered so a company can’t come back to me and claim that I’ve done something wrong.

Is this a good time to mention cardboard number plates■■? :grimacing:

You’re not going to heaven Coddy

There wont be room for me up there…

Too many doo good, whiter than white, I cant/wont change a lightbulb/make up a card number plate peeps are gonna beat me too it…

Ah sod it, at least in Hell i can stuff the speed limit, run bent, have no number plate etc, far better than sitting on a cloud, playing a harp and wondering why the transport manager shot me with a 12 bore cos i would not change a bulb…

What is so hard about using a screwdriver and your hand
You could not balls it up if you tried.
Except I did by buying 12v bulbs instead of 24v, I spent £2million buying 2 bulbs from the services and did not notice the voltage until i blew both of them

Point proven…for all you know that could have caused the whole trailer electrics to blow…then how would a company see that against a driver who “just got on with it”, especially in these tough times…as I said, I wouldn’t do it until I’ve been showed!

   are you being serious
Its a bulb, do you struggle at home when a light blows? or spend £££ on a sparky to change it incase your house blows up?

No I don’t wait for a sparky, funnily enough I don’t have a house manager which looks over my shoulder, so I’m fine in that department.

Yep…I didn’t feel the need to point it out in plain english, considering the point of the post was that a bulb had gone. My point is people might think its easy enough but then end up doing the stupidest of mistakes. What if it was a fuse that had gone and a driver had mistakenly put the wrong fuse in?..As I said, the TM would use any excuse to get rid of you, so I just don’t chance it…as soon as I’m shown it then I’m fine, even if it’s something I already know, such as changing a bulb. At least I could then shift the blame onto somebody else.

But silly me, obviously everyone except me is an electrician all of a sudden, and of course, electrical systems never do intefere with eachother do they? :bulb:

If I’m honest yes. If it’s a new truck I’ll ask how to check the oil and water and how to top it up correctly. With a new diesel pump, every company has a different system, so I always ask how to use it. Put it this way…I’ve always been asked back to a company, clearly my attitude can’t be too bad can it!

Are we talking about at home or on a truck? On a truck I’ve simply never needed to change one, but I did ask how to change a headlight bulb on a volvo and given a quick demonstration…that’s easy! At home, as I don’t have someone watching me, I’ll just ‘give it a go’.

Your crazy, you do realise you are putting yourself and your neighbours in great danger, have you seen what can happen if you put a 100w bulb in instead of a 60w? :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

■■■■ the neighbours…they don’t pay my wages! But no, I haven’t seen what happens, I just presume it gets brighter. I only use 60w or 40w, but there’s a lot more to electrics than just Watts :stuck_out_tongue:

Stop being so paranoid and just change the lorry bulbs yourself, every other driver seems to be able to do it without being sacked.

TM’s are paid to do a job so I make them do it.

Okay, I’ve read all the way through this thread, no-one’s asked the most obvious question yet so bugger it I will…

… how many Trucknet members does it take to change a light bulb? :grimacing: :grimacing:
