Life on the tip

Watching that brings back memory’s of when i used to be a drivers mate for cleanaway. The tip in croydon used to close when it rained as it was a {zb} to get up the hill. Many times we had the tractor drag us about.

To the people who do it now days, do you love the smell in the summer?. I still do when i go past a tip and get told by my little lady that i am a weirdo lol

On the WRG sites they wouldnt lets put the chain on the front of the truck the machine operator had to do it H&S apparently :unamused: :unamused:

Yeh, right oh, those idle ■■■■■■■ wouldnt get out if they saw you slipping under the ■■■■■■ youve got more chance of the seagulls helping than a dozer driver :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp:

H+S goes out the window at the best of times, but @ 06.00am, when there is a monster queue, its dog eat dog on them there hills :open_mouth:

Did you know that they cost the job on TYRES PER MILE, not Miles per gallon :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

The work i did was Leachate removal so we were trying to get out of landfills full which was entertaining in a 6x2 Foden with near 30ton of liquid in a tanker with one set of baffles lol

TBF, the Billy Bowie boys had an easier time than you then, the lechate tanks seemed to be located with some thought, i.e., at the bottom of the road, near the weighbridge~~, not up in the clouds where we were expected to tip, whatever the weather, whatever the conditions :unamused:~~
TBH, if you were sucking lechate out from the top of a tip, we would have problems allround, the ■■■■■ SHOULD seep downwards :open_mouth:

I fininshed the tanker job about 4 years ago but alot of sites have since moved the tanks. When i was on that contract alot of the sites were just crap worst 2 were brogborough before they moved the tank farm the mud was level with the bumper or we had to go over the landfill to the other side of the site to a remote tank usually on the back of a D6.
The other site was colsterworth which was a complete nightmare you had to ford a 2 feet of muddy ouse for about quarter mile turn around back up to the tanks when full you had to back track the pull up a steep clay bottom hill. After 2 weeks on Colsterworth my truck weighed another half a ton in mud!!!

Anyone had the displeasure of tipping at Viridor, Ardley? Absolute ■■■-hole of a place. They used to throw their toys out of the pram if a lorry from the stone pit didn’t use the wheelwash, never said a word to any dustcart driver that avoided it. Crazy over H & S but ignored the fact their drott had track plates missing. If you go in there a crumb overweight they won’t let you tip unless your company acknowledge the fact with a fax/e-mail. Some of our drivers were even asked to take muck to the asbestos dump area and actually drive on the stuff! Don’t know why they don’t get the lorry drivers to drive the compactor and level their own loads. :imp:
At least the Viridor-owned stone pit’s exhausted now so I shouldn’t have to go there again

I"ve been to Ardley a few times but i took leachate there. On weighbridge bollocking for being 150kgs over weight off weighbridge to turning point half way down on left try a screw 44tonnes round on a muddy surface back past weighbridge then get a banksman and reverse through the car enterance and in to a compound.
If you have been there you will know how tight it is and on the way get another bollocking for being over weigh again and leave dazed and confused

And why put the weighbridge right by the road so that when the weighbridge operator/Hitler decides to unload himself there’s a queue of trucks back to Junc 10?
Don’t start me on the coffin dodgers that come out of the civic amenity area and park in the hatchings to put the rear seats back in their car with National Trust sticker in the window!

You should of seen the polish banksman trying to stop said oaps as i was trying(badly) to reverse through the enterance to their good dead of recycling then having to blow the air horns to get them out the to get out then try and get to the weigh bridge which was also a tight turn.
Who you on for then Muckaway ?

Smith & Sons (old fashioned name, office answers with “Smiths Bletchington”) Good company, respect the directors and virtually all the drivers but there are a few people above us and below Smith family with some silly ideas…

i sometimes load ■■■■■■■■ out of viridor waste transfer sites , 2 weeks ago the machine op overloaded me by 800 kgs so i weighed 32,800 kgs , got myself on the weighbridge to be told by bridge taliban " your 800 over mate " when i asked for them to take some off i was told they could’nt do that because they have no way of doing it . so i then asked , what do we do then ? said weighbridge man told me i had to sign a document saying i was leaving the site knowingly overweight :open_mouth: i pointed out to him that i was’nt leaving the site overweight and that the excess weight needed to come off , a radio conference then took place and i was told to turn it around and tip it all back off again and they we reload me . the machine op was not best pleased …

up shot is he reloaded me ok but decided he wanted to be awkward and i eventualy left the site 4t under weight … my boss then had his turn to have a pop at me … i’m begining to wonder if going back to driving was a good idea

That was Bluetooths’ wagon! He’d only been driving it for a week when he skidded on a bend somewhere out Brailles way, apparently something wrong with the road surface his tacho said he wasn’t speeding. The other 4 wheel Volvo is a showpiece-Mr James has mats on mats so they don’t get dirty, carpeted engine hump…If you check biglorryblog his lorry was on there last year. Volvo/Renault/Mack saw the bulldogs on the cab and sent him some Mack goodies…

Must be loads of H&S risks with this towing scene…

Your yard is a bit of a tip mate :stuck_out_tongue:

It was probably fine when we had proper motors like double drive Fodens and the like with loads of ground clearance

I thought that you’d have preferred to be using a 6x2 on the job wheelnut  .But that’s one of the type of places where I learnt that double drive rules having spent enough time in landfill sites trying to haul out the knackered Drott bulldozers that we were using on the council with a 4x2 Clydesdale multilift. :open_mouth: :laughing:But it’s a 6x4 in the video but I’m wondering if it’s specced with diff locks and cross locks.

ive got a 6x4 MAN like that they have diff and cross locks but they are not the best trucks for traction the scania i had before would keep going much longer than the MAN

On the council I’d have been happy with a Leyland Reiver  .The Clydesdale with the multi lift equipment was around 8.5 tonnes Unladen and the Drott was almost 9. :open_mouth:  But like wheelnut said it was the Fodens which ruled the tips .

If its the one I am thinking of we “borrowed” it for the Commercial Motor "Tip In " comparison test, the quarry was very wet and claggy and despite our best efforts all the manufacturers test fleet motors ended up with mud all over the floors, Brian went to get into Smiths Volvo… took a look inside and removed his boots before getting in, It looked like it had just come from amotor show

That’s the one! Pete “Councillor” James (he really is an Alf Garnet lookalike parish councillor) drives it and he wouldn’t hesitate to drag one of the directors out of it if they had dirty boots! Used to do demos for Daf and worked for Smiths before that early 70s to 84 so he’s one of Godfrey Smiths “old school”. I’ve known him drive other peoples trucks and then tell them off for the state they were in! Smashing bloke to work with, really popular with customers (unless they upset him). He had an R-reg 4 wheel Foden before the Volvo and when he took it on scrubbed the cab before he’d drive it! Was like new when it went…
