Licencing question

I’ve got the possibilty of some work clearing cattle sheds out with a bobcat skid steer, and am looking at ways to transport it about. It’s too heavy for a landy and trailer (the machine, and attatchments and spare deisel is about 2.5 tons), and would also be out of the league of a 3.5tonner as well.

Would I need an o licence for a 7.5t? All the truck would be doing is moving the bobcat from farm to farm, and maybe fetching some stuff for myself. If so, would a restricted be the one?

I am also looking at the possibility of using one of the farm’s tractors for the job, but will need to clarifiy the use of red diesel.

Surely that isn’t too heavy for a landy and trailer? A landy will be able to legally pull 3500Kg and you can easily get a trailer in under 1000Kg (Ifor Williams lightest 3500Kg plated trailer comes in at only 620Kg giving a 2880Kg payload). If it’s close you just put the diesel and some of the attachments into the back of the landy and that’ll surely get you in under the 3500Kg limit.

When I bought it I borrowed a mates discovery and ifor williams trailer and it looked seriously overweight, and I don’t want to take the risk really.

If my recolection is correct, I will be ok towing it with the tractor on red diesel as I am towing it for agricultural purposes.

I’m not sure about Discos but afaik all Defenders are plated to tow 3500Kg so with the right trailer you can easily carry 2500Kg without being overweight.

That is my understanding of the red diesel rules too, but I’m not an expert.

Red diesel rules
