Well this morning about an hour after posting forms, I received the personalised renewal forms which are different and also show on the top that I should enclose new photo and no fee would apply.
Do I just wait and see what happens or panic and assume that they will write to me in due course requesting a photo and hope I can send in time?

With my first one they part processed it, found something that hadn’t been done quite right and sent it back. But they included an envelope with a code and if you used that code, they fast tracked it so didn’t have to go through the whole queue again. Was sorted very fast.
Nothing much you can do as sending a pic now without the rest will just confuse the delicate little flowers that are DVLA…they’ll probably all go off with stress.

A photo licence lasts for 10 years. If it is 10 years old you need a new up to date photo for the licence to remind valid. If you have a current passport that is less than 10 years old you can renew online without the need for a new photo. As I understand it. But as you have sent it by post then it’s all a bit of a moot subject.

And for reference if you need a new photo and dont have a current passport it is much easier to go to a post office that does online renewals. It costs a little bit more but they take your photo in store on a tablet check the application and send it all electronically.
For a licence renewal with a new photo you do have to pay for it as far as I know. I had to pay when I did mine.

I received mine last week , 2 parts , photo part , medical part , where did you get £17 from ? , I couldn’t find anything on guidance books , Googling it I came up with £21.50

£14 for post renewal and £21.50 for post office renewal where they take your picture and submit it electronically. From .gov site.
