Licence renewal/ added catagory

As i am going to be 45 end of next month i had to have a medical and send my licence off 21st this month. Emailed them wednesday just gone to check they got it apart from having to send the same info again (name date of birth etc) which i did late wednesday got a proper responce back thursday saying it was going to be posted that day and i recived it this morning.

I have had b+e added on with a start date of 16/12/21 which wasnt on there before is this because of the recent law changes? I had a quick look at the dcla catagories and it said as it was added after 2013 i could tow a trailer upto a mam of 3.5t provided the towing vehicle was upto it.

Silly question whch i think i can answer for myself but just want to make sure. As its a b+e does the towing vechicle have to be a car. or are we going to see dodgy companies using this loop hole to get extra drops on a rigid by making the poor sods tow a trailer

B+E is definitely only a car.
C on its own already allows a trailer of up to 750kg.

Depends…

Category B - if you passed your test before 1 January 1997
You’re usually allowed to drive a vehicle and trailer combination up to 8,250kg maximum authorised mass (MAM). View your driving licence information to check.

You’re also allowed to drive a minibus with a trailer over 750kg MAM.

Category B - if you passed your test on or after 1 January 1997
You can drive vehicles up to 3,500kg MAM with up to 8 passenger seats (with a trailer up to 750kg).

You can also tow heavier trailers if the total MAM of the vehicle and trailer is not more than 3,500kg.

Category BE
You can drive a vehicle with a MAM of 3,500kg with a trailer.

The size of the trailer depends on the BE ‘valid from’ date shown on your licence. If the date is:

before 19 January 2013, you can tow any size trailer within the towing limits of the vehicle
on or after 19 January 2013, you can tow a trailer with a MAM of up to 3,500kg within the towing limits of the vehicle
