Found this on a Spanish fb page, Jose Carrillo apparently operated a marathon at one time.

Excellent drawing! Jose Carrillo had all sorts of units and I often wondered if they used owner-drivers with a franchise to run in colours (like Westermann used to) - just a thought!

They also used to run unaccompanied fridges into Morocco pick up tomatoes in boxes with ‘Produce of EU’ stamped all over them. Another example of EU corruption

Or, of some private companies breaking EU law?

I did Morocco for several years. It was rife, I’m afraid. It involved official inspections by both Moroccan & Spanish authorities (it was only when customs opened the back doors that you glimpsed the evidence). Corruption then.

I do remember the Spanish “revisions” of oranges etc just before Xmas.
Some done without even entering the depot…

There are loopholes everywhere. A few years ago we had people get seriously ill, possibly a couple died. The cause was tracked down to contaminated, New Zealand berries. The berries were grown in human sewerage, exported from China to New Zealand where they were put into plastic bags. Seems the mere act of putting a few berries into bags makes it legal to claim ‘Product of New Zealand’. To this day i refuse to eat anything from the Land of the Long White Cloud.

Few marathons from an Argentinian (i think) fb page…

Marathon cab on scania 360 running gear from Argentina…

How odd! I wonder if they were all Scanias with Marathon cabs. Perhaps BL sold them as a job lot when the T45 hit the road, or more likely, sold them the tooling.

The details on the scania one suggest it was just the cab reused, i suppose they use what they can if they don’t have much…

The others look reasonably standard (non standard sleeper on one) there are pictures of older Leyland/ aec models
so i wonder if the marathon would have been the last gasp of the Leyland brand in south America…

I remember tales in the magazines about Pat Kennett’s adventures in South America for Leyland vehicles…

Steve

You’ve hit the nail on the head. Of course! Pat Kennett used to be a field engineer of some sort for Leyland and he used to write a column called Looking Back for either TRUCK or Truck & Driver mag. He spent a lot of time in South America helping them to keep their Comets (Pat’s favourite Leyland) on the road. I’d forgotten about that column!

I’ve been flogging a lot of my old magazines and re reading the looking back columns, seems he led an interesting life… Sha

Couple of Spanish marathons found on a Spanish fb page…

Unusual to see Spanish Marathons. I notice that they Mk2s. Odd that such long-distance Marathons used the narrow version of the cab!

I searched this thread to see if these photos had been on before and noticed there are a few Spanish mk2s, they must have been cheap…
