The second one is obviously a conversion- the wheels are different. The other one might be a factory special but, considering the number of village blacksmiths in Europe adding axles to vehicles, I would put my money on that.
I wonder what persuaded the mixer man to buy the most exclusively long distance vehicle available at the time?
Brother Andy, just home from Saudi. 12/03/84. Midhurst. He hired the Vauxhall Astra to get home to Barrow.
Judging by the bumper, he must have been through a sandstorm. Here’s the same lorry in Caravan’s yard, Dammam, with John Longhorn at the helm.
John Longhorn, Gordon Shepherd and myself set up an overland operation called Freight Forwarding International. We had 2 Transcons. John and myself stayed out in Saudi and Gordon ran it from an office in Midhurst for about 3 years.
John.

John,
Excellent photos. I remember very clearly me dads drivers coming back from m/e with transcons in the same state. Unfortunately all the photos seem to have been lost over the years.
Willhire tilts ? You must have been a posh haulier, haha, dad generally had euro fleet or collease hire tilts, with inter swappable belly tanks… Seem to remember something about collease not allowing their trailers to go abroad… Didn’t stop anyone !!

This is VKN 45X parked near Lautrans in Milan Kenny Snooks was driving it then & it was LHD, I drove it for 3-4 trips overland to Athens after Kenny moved on but at the time was in The F89 next to Him.
This is EHJ 562T up to its diff in Hungary I’d loaded tires in Vitoria RO & parked at Bekaskaba & it thawed overnight lol, that cafe by the airport there was where I first saw MTV
I also owned FWC 611Y iirc it’s reg plate which had been one of Don Alexanders monstrous Transcon, unfortunately it’s the only truck I’ve owned I’ve not got a photograph of, it was orange on 12:00 x 20’s I’d love to see a photograph of it.
robert1952:
There were some more weird and wonderful variants of the LHD Transcon with high roofs and stretched chassis…210
That picture was taken by Me Chinky was off to Yugoslavia doing gods work for Johnny South.
Oh well it won’t let Me post anymore Transcon pictures, I’ve always found it difficult posting pictures on this site. I’ll see You in another long while.
