Plenty over here.
There used to be 1 I did see regular drove a fridge but think his was above the knee never a problem
A late (deceased) highly skilled tanker driver (Edgar Bradshaw) where I worked long ago, only had one leg (plus a false wooden leg), no problem for Edgar. Well one night a number of us were overnighting (before sleeper cabs were invented) at George Brays digs in Islington (long gone thank god), well us young uns nicked Edgars false leg during the night. Following morning up early and away back to Batley leaving Edgar to search for his leg, we had it. Back home and Edgar was going to kill us one by one
But the old lad had got a loaded 8 wheel Atki tanker from Islington to Batley with one leg.
Looking back it was a terrible thing to do to the old lad, but we were young and foolish
When he’d calmed down a bit he had a laugh about it.
P.S. Fred Chappell threatened to sack us young uns if we ever pulled a stroke like that again.
@grumpy_old_man similar thing happened over here, probably 60 years ago. Two brothers from a trucking family, had each lost a leg, one left the other right. After a night on the turps, the young blokes pinched one of the fellow’s wooden leg. They posted it to his home address, Freight on Reciever.
I wasn’t involved, it was a bit before my time.
A workmate broke an ankle falling off a trailer and drove the Atki Borderer from Kent back to So’ton. Stick it in first with engine off, hit the starter, and away you go. Clutchless changes for about 3 hours with no motorways in use at the time.
Nearer the topic_ I did see driver who was fully wheelchair bound. He had a Magnum artic fully adapted for him. Driving is one thing but how he went about coupling? I can’t imagine.
For the OP, some driving jobs need more mobility than others, I am sure than with a bit of thought a driving job for a monoped would be do-able.
Monoped?
More recently there is a wheelchair bound owner drive in Dewsbury who’s motor is equipped with a hoist to get in from ground level up into the saddle. ( I’ve never actually seen it but he’s well known locally.
How the hell he got his disability passed DVLA at Swansea is nothing short of a miracle.
I knew an old boy wagon driver who had a serious stroke, recovered enough to get it passed by DVSA on his renewal medical and came back to work full tanker class 1. He was an old Eddie Stobart trucker, was in the projects office. Stobart kicked him to the curb, so he went back to his old tanker firm.
Next door neighbour only has one arm. Yet doesn’t stop him driving a motorbike it’s adapted so clutch and brake lever are on same side. Attaches his false arm to a knob on handlebars
He’ll have a code on his licence to say he has to drive vehicles with specific adaptations. ![]()
