LGV drivers are aware of this

…but cyclists probably aren’t.

Time for compulsory cycling awareness for cyclists?

Think that should be “MOST”

I had the pleasure of attending the urban awareness course only 4 weeks ago.

Well what a joke, we spent 4 hrs in the classroom watching videos, including the one above. We then spent 4 hrs riding a bike along main roads, lanes and canal paths. We must have clocked up about 10 miles whilst being assessed on all the hand signals etc.

The only cyclist on the course was the cycling instructor!

Apparently all that should make you a better truck driver

Only good part was 7 hrs CPC.

Oh yes the worlds gone mad or at least the haulage industry has

Christ, you wouldn’t have got me doing that. I have two mountain bikes, but never ride them on the roads, let alone main roads.

Trouble I have with this video is that it is false. A good truck driver would alter the distance between themselves and the windscreen in the driving seat, to give a much broader span of the area the cyclists are in, as they made a left hand turn like that. They would also be keeping an eye on what was coming up behind, whilst waiting to turn. Blind spots have as much to do with a drivers lack of spatial awareness, as to what is happening around them.

notice how the unit is kinked to the left to make the blind spot much much worse
i have in the past driven units with 2 wide angle mirrors set differently which goes someway to cancel out the blind spots

What’s a foden?

The most interesting part of that video. :sunglasses:

10 miles in 4 hours■■?

It’s a wonder you could keep the bikes uptight riding that slowly, you must have been barely moving. :stuck_out_tongue:

Yes it’s obvious that the stunt has been set up to provide the worst possible scenario regards mirror and vehicle position. However it is a good,if probably intentionally exaggerated, example of the very real issue of blind spots.Bearing in mind that there is no guarantee that a typically suicidal cyclist won’t try to undertake after the start of the turn.

The trick is not to let your vision get “out of date” by approaching a row of cyclists from behind without “Noting” them, or sitting at the lights short of a left turn picking your nose, and not noting the large number coming up to stop under your mirror, out of sight…

We should all be checking our o/s mirrors regular even when stationary I suggest. :bulb:

I use the BOW LEFT TURN roundabout every day coming away from stratford biggest ■■■■ up ive ever seen planning wise ie cycle lane lights

Quite why the EU hasnt worked out that DAF mirrors are not fit for the purpose is beyond me
They should all be banned til they are retro fitted with scania mirrors

Play another record you’re as repetitive as a Heart FM playlist. If Dafs were dangerous they wouldn’t get type approval. Now run along and sign up a direct debit for Brake.*
