LGV C+E Test Failed Twice

I having been driving LGV Cat C trucks for 13 years and decided it was time to do my LGV C+E. I booked a course and took my first test last Thursday.

1st Test Result - Fail
I only had three or four minors and was told it wasn’t a bad drive but he had to fail me because a car had slow down a little as I was coming onto a roundabout. Car did not have to break hard or swerve just adjust their speed a little so I did not class it as anywhere near dangerous. I obviously felt hard done by but I got over it eventually and booked a second test.

2nd Test Result - Fail
Again only a couple of minors but the assessor failed me on gears for one particular junction where I needed to turn right. I waited for the road to clear and pulled of in a low gear because I was on a hill. The trucked jumped a bit which the assessor said was the wheels spinning. It was only a small amount but it took away some of my momentum and I got the truck to the middle where cars would wait to give way before continuing to turn right. In an Artic the ideal is to complete in one go but this junction is on a bend and cars are on you before you known it. This happened to me and I had to give way to a car coming from the left. In the meantime a car came from the right and my trailer was still in the lane. Car had to slow and wait a few seconds but again nothing dangerous and no cars sounded their horns as they could since what the situation was. I never rolled back on the hill. I was expecting minors for gears, but he failed me for it!! Obviously gutted again!!.

I want to do my test again but need to save the funds but it seems ( and this is with speaking with other people at the test centre) that you can fail for really minor things and its a bit pot luck with how other drivers react with you on the day.

Can anyone share their experiences with there C+E test and how many times they took to pass and have they had any tests they failed for none dangerous mistakes that should have had minors.

I failed mine yesterday morning, I didn’t even get out of the test centre!! Totally ■■■■■■ the reverse up  & took 3 shunts but I will be re booking Monday & I will keep going until I get the pass!!

Sorry to here you failed

But it can come sown to the judgement of the examiner on the day also how you react to the situation

On my test I mounted the kerb but still passed this was due to the examiner asking me to turn right at a junction just after we turned there was a wagon parked ( doing road works ) he said " pass as safe as possibly " which left no choice but because I didnt panic or anything took as the normal the rest of drive was all good did have a couple minors but still passed

As you know you can pass then go for it again pick up dust self down move on

A read of this might help

It seems from reading between the lines on what has been posted that its not a lack of training or being test ready but simply making an error or two on test day so all I can say is try again because there is nowt else to say

Hi cbuk,
I think you would benefit from interpreting your actions as not been dangerous into the actual rules the examiner is testing you on
> Driving Test Report:
> 20 Maintain progress
>
> In order to pass your test you must show that you can drive at
> a realistic speed appropriate to the road and traffic conditions.
> You should approach all hazards at a safe, controlled speed,
> without being over cautious or interfering with the progress of
> other traffic.[/b] Always be ready to move away from junctions as
> soon as it is safe and correct to do so. Driving excessively slowly
> can create dangers for yourself and other drivers.
> [/quote]
> Take a look at the the Driving Test Report, DL25D (The Driving Test Report Explained)
> Go to the last page, and look at section 20 - gov.uk/government/uploads/s … t_form.pdf
> During your first test you said that when you entered a roundabout and a car had to adjust their speed a little, so although it wasn’t dangerous as you mentioned, just the fact that even a minor adjustment to their speed is enough to get it marked down
> During your second test you said a car had to slow and wait a few seconds, again this is enough to get it marked down, not because it was dangerous, but because you interfered with another motorists progression
> Hope it all goes well for you next time

Thanks ThirtyTwo for your reply. It s just frustrating you get a fail a not a minor for something that is not dangerous but if that is the rule they have to work too there is very little I can do about that.
Just have to focus on Test three now.

Thanks for the replies

cbuk,

You have my empathy with your experiences with the practical C+E.

On my first attempt nerves got the better of me and I screwed up the reverse and didn’t bother with the rest of it because I was so stressed and fed up.
Second attempt last week I had an absolutely nightmare of a test with heavy difficult traffic conditions, tricky road works, school kids from numerous schools along route, cars parked partly on pavements on narrow roads and one on a very tight right turn junction opposite the traffic lights (how I made it round there was unbelievable at just 5mph). Clipped a kerb after gearbox range selector issue on a tight left turn and that was it FAIL. Yet I drove well during the whole test even my examiner stated that to my instructor.

It appears that there is an element of luck here with the C+E test because it’s so easy to fail it, many have reiterated this view. I feel quite confident and in control driving an artic, my only real concern is reversing and that from the perspective of doing it for real i.e. during the course of work driving.

So I wish you good luck with your retake, mine is at the end of February, remember you are not alone.

This wasn’t me (honest guv) but when I was doing my class 2 my instructor told me this tale.

Lad comes back from class 1 test, examiner has the chat at the end passes him certificate (pass)

Instructor waits for him to get out of the cab, then takes him to one side. “went ok then?” “Yes fine, couple of minors, pretty good drive”

“Did you go through the one way system in Stone?”

“Yes why?”

“I’ve just had a bloke on the phone, reckons you’ve taken the side out of his Mondeo with the arse end of the trailer”

Points towards fresh superficial damage

“You know,” says the examiner, “I thought he was a bit close for comfort”
