I had an AEC Mercury 16 tonner with a 505 from 77 till 79 and made it a sleeper (a luxury in 77)

Goaty:
A mate of mine often tells me of an old 4 wheeler flat he used to drive for “Feathers” of Bradford years ago. Apparently the engine was a leyland 505 that was transplanted from a coach. He will have it that said motor put out 505 horse power. I question this. I did suggest that it may have been the different gearing in the diff that made it, in his own words “a [zb]’ flyin’ machine” and not 500+ ponies.Could any of our more experienced members shed any light on this ?
Hi Goaty re your question about the AEC ( later Leyland) 505 engine, take a look at:-
aec.middx.net/units/engines1.htm
Which gives the power output for all post-war AEC engines including the AEC AV & AH 505 @135-182bhp.
