The one I was referring to was on the Old Durham Rd running through Birtley, just before AEI, Cables, Regards Larry.

Levertons had a large depot at Windsor but I don’t know if Finnings took it over? My neighbours lad works for Finnings at Chesterfield, previously it was Bowmakers but at Clay Cross. When I was at Tilcon we had an evening out at Bowmakers on the A5 at Cannock (now Finnings) and it was quite an experience seeing the vast machinery.

Pete.

Was it Finnings that took over Bowmaker Caterpillar at Brownhills ? I recall going by them on the A5 in the 60’s and 70’s,they always had a yard full of many £000’s of Plant lined up,I often wondered where they sold it all.Cheers Bewick.

Levertons was next door to Pickfords on Durham Rd Birtley. The site is now a car supermarket.
The company in the premises behind Bell Trucks is MST ( Midland Steel Traders I think ) they specialise in making and repairing tracks for plant and earth overs. They are still there but Bells closed their branch about three years ago. AB Volvo (Plant) is on the opposite corner to what was Bells.

Levertons used to have a depot near Wigan ,I went there quite a lot for spares during 70s and 80s. :unamused:

long shot has anyone got any pics of caterpillar 951 trackcavators made late 60s
cheers

truckfest2004.jpgI used to own a truck that was new to Finnings in 1983, but have been unable to find any pics of it in their livery.
No surprise it had a CAT engine

I used to pick up spares from Levertons at wisbech when I worked for Ben Wyatt at Snetterton about 1971. Jim.

Leverton Manchester was my first job from leaving school and going onto YTS at 16 during 1988. The fleet of wagons then at Wigan was 2 Mercedes 17 tonne, one a standard day cab with drop side body for parts and the other was rest cab with hiab on the back end for the field service of big stuff like D8 and 769.
The fork truck division ran out of Spalding with an F10 Volvo drivers name Jason________ pulling an open trailer and his mate Warren_______ who had a Mercedes SK and another driver called Martin Boddington who also had an SK both with curtain side trailers. R Garn Transport of Spalding also did some traction work to help out.
Foden got involved with Caterpillar around that time so it was bye to Mercedes and hello Foden with either a Cat 3306 or 3408 engine and the new Caterpillar livery. Jason and Warren got two new F reg units and trailers.
On the construction division at Wigan as it was called then , there was a guy called Dougie Haselden (D & B HASELDEN) or Mr Haselden to us young lads, and his brother in law Terry who ran two immaculate green Scanias. Two straight talking blokes from Wigan.
The other contractors were Warren Fayle who had a Scania 4 wheeler and IW Brimec on a Ford Cargo.

I will be back few days with photos.

Thanks Beanie,
look forward to seeing the photos

I believe Leverton’s Caterpillar in Lincolnshire was owned and run by farmers Fred Myers and family from Lincoln. They still farm today trading as Leverton Farms.

This CAT Digger had problems with air locks in its fuel system, It took a long time to sort the problem out, The fuel tank had a internal filter inside the the tank, There was no mention of this in the users handbook at all, But it was sorted at the end of the day, Now the reason its on the back of our lowloader is that the hydraulic pump had packed in, so we were taking it to our workshop to solve the problem by removing the faulty one & getting a replacement from Levertons at Birtley, & I must say the lads in the stores were very helpful, Which made a nice change from some of the places we went to for spares etc, Regards Larry.

The Same CAT Some time later being loaded at Beadnell Northumberland to be transported to another site at Ponteland, Regards Larry.
