Level crossings

Maybe it’s just me, but does anyone else question the wisdom of putting them emergency phones at level crossings AFTER the crossing? You know the ones; the sign says something along the lines of drivers of slow or wide vehicles park up and use phone.
Surely by the time you’ve reached the phone you’ve cleared the crossing?

While I’m on, why is there only one monopolies commission?

I think they normally have one each side.

Harry is right. Usually there will also be a phone on the approach to a level crossing as well. Drivers of low, slow or wide vehicles SHOULD use the phone on the approach to gain permission before crossing over. The phone beyond the crossing is for the drivers of such vehicles to confirm with the signalbox that their vehicle is clear of the level crossing once they have passed over it.

There was a very bad train crash in 1968 when Police escorting an abnormal load failed to do this.

And there we have (judging by your username) the definitive answer.
I must own up to having never noticed the one prior to the crossing to be honest. You live and learn.

Now, how about the monopolies one then?
