I wonder if anyone can help me. I was telling a friend about a blind side reverse I had to do in the mid nineties. So bad I recall it nearly 20 years later. I was driving for GBE from Fradley, about 1996, had one of their roadrailer trailers and a 2534 Merc with EPS. I was collecting exhaust systems from somewhere near Halifax and had to drive around the back of the factory into a yard built, clearly, for smaller trailers. The bay was one of those inset into the factory about 15m with a hairs breadth each side and a wall opposite. My memory says it was just 16 mts from the bay but I guess it must have been a bit more but not much! It had to be done blindside. Took me about 20 mins. Makes me sweat thinking about it.
Can anyone tell me what the factory was called? Anyone else experience it?
If not sure get out and check better to take the sniggers than hit someone’s cab the worst place I went to was Levers at Warrington total nightmare I often let the shunter do it for me I was always brilliant at reversing but some places are really bad it’s all about the angles you approach it and the shunter knew them all it’s no shame just common sense
Always get out and look. Take your time balls to rushing it. That’s one thing I do like about this job. All the wagons drivers I’ve ever encountered whatever they were like before automatically seem to switch into respect mode for someone reversing (only exception is at my home yard when they fly about
). I’ve personally never seen anyone laugh, snigger or ridicule or get on like its a competition when someone’s struggling or working hard to back up. I’ve seen stacks of cases where if someone’s in a spot they get out and offer to banksman or offer an idea up.
Remember there are a lot of tell tale points to look out for, tyre marks on the concrete, potholes, lights over the roller shutters, a couple of old gloves chucked on the floor,
cracker-bar:
I pulled an absolute peach of a blindside onto a bay the other week, jumped out to open the doors, and realised I was on the bay next to the one I should have been on. Made a total balls up of shuffling it over, in front of a load of EE drivers!
Hahhh… I did the same in Washington services (south) but as it wasn’t a bay I just left it like I was aiming for it all along!
I made a pillock of myself on a normal reverse today so don’t worry about it.
Although Im a class 2 newbie (passed Nov last year), and only just entering into the comfort zone as regards shuffling my box rigid around (MAN TG), I
ve found your honest admissions of reversing difficulties extremely comforting! Ill defo be going for my class 1 in the not-too-distant, and it
s real nice to know that nobody is flawless all the time! Thanks fellas!!
I like it when theres at least 3 clear numbered parking bays say 29, 30, 31. I’ll aim for the middle-un (30) be happy with 29 or 31, but usually end up in at least two of them.
Think the shunt limit before other drivers switch their dash cams on is about 3 - 5, then expect to be on youtube in the near future.
I’ve made much bigger meals of it than this though
Dave - any idea why I cant view your piccie? I
m just getting a black box mate.
Not sure, its a video so may take a while to show up depedning on your connection speed. Unless i’ve posted it wrong…

Dave,
It’s posted and displaying just fine and worked correctly when I tried it.
In that case its more than likely a problem at my end guys - I
m running off a t-mobile dongle tonight!
EDIT - might even have used up the streaming data allowance.

Me too
Not the end of the world/hanging offence ( yet )…
I had earache (proper earache not abuse of the earholes from the missus) the other week and it messed me up totally, couldn’t seem to get the right starting position always to close and had to have at least 3 shunts and then another shunt for good measure when straight.
Yet the next day I was fine straight in no shunts at all. Even consdiered asking other drivers how good they thought I was and if they would like to touch me (but thats backfired on me in the past).
Good days and bad days I suppose, strangely I’m more likely to ■■■■ it up when theres loads of space rather than a tight bay to aim at.
New drivers shouldn’t worry about it to much as mentioned its very rare somone will take the ■■■■ whilst you perform the manouver and may even offer some tips, its a definante no no to offer to do it for another driver whose struggling as only by experience can true enlightenment be reached.
