Hi All
Due to illness ive been left with drop foot which is basically no power in my right foot so not ideal for a driver , ive had my car adapted to be driven left footed (see link) and get along fine .
http://www.mobility-centres.org.uk/informationsheets/guide%201.htm
now my company have said they would look into having one of the automatic artics converted ,my question is has anyone heard or seen this done before i held my class 1 for 10 years and thought that was my career over but maybe theres hope!!
Really appreciate your input on this.
Never seen it done with auto lgv but there is no reason not to
haven’t heard of or seen it but see no reason why not.
Top marks to your boss though, but don’t build your hopes up too much, someone somewhere will find a reason why you’re not fit to drive
Good luck anyway
Well good for your company they obviously think a lot of you so let’s hope they do it otherwise unfortunately you might struggle to find another job. Good luck.
have a word with the people that did the pedal on yer car…flip up type is easy to do on any vehicle…be carefull off other drivers getting in cab after you. its a natural thing to think its a clutch for those that dont realise… inform insurance aswell. just in case.
Boss may be able to get some funding to pay for adaptation from DWP - check website for info on employing disabled people - classed as adaptation to keep you in work rather than claiming. Having worked for the DWP in the past have seen various things paid for. Seem to recall a driver who lost a leg in forces getting help and driving adapted C+E - sure it was in one of the mags.
There was a guy in a wheelchair with a Volvo FH I-Shift and hand-controls.
Even had a crane to get in and out of the cab.
I think he was in T&D: 10 or 15 years ago.
Hiya …i know it was only a car …my lass took her test in a granada auto and used her left foot.
she’d had a motorbike crash and messed her right leg up bad, she had lessons and pased her test
driving left foot.
John
After thinking a bit more about it, would the conversion simply be putting the gas pedal where the clutch would normally be?
If so would you have trouble getting your left foot from the gas to the brake pedal owing to the steering column shroud?
Thanks for the replies, all good advice .I had forgotten about the steering column shroud i doubt there is a easy way round that . Will keep you posted if i get get anywhere .
As above I can’t see why it can’t be converted fair play to your company you must have found a gem there they obviously think alot off you hope it comes off and you can keep on trucking.
Have seen a couple adapted for hand controls, (pull throttle, push brake) it is doable. Best of luck with it, there are systems out there!

Was that Lawsons of Cockermouth?
DWP thing is called Access to Work - pays for any equipment up to 80% i think
