It is common in europe to do a quick left indicator to let the drivers behind know that it is safe to over take,on mountainous roads, with a long hard slog up the slopes,is it common in the uk,and can you get nicked for it,if caused an accident, when you did this?
Right indicator in mainland Europe surely?
Not sure if you could get nicked in Europe, but I doubt you could here, you cannot get nicked for flashing your headlamps to let another vehicle out even if it causes an accident because the law holds that flashing headlamps do not convey any meaning other than “I am here”.
Back in the olden days, when DCs were few and M’ways were a gleam in Mr Marples’ eye, we used to do this. I gave up ages ago when I realise that few if any other drivers understood.
If the circumstances are right I’ll often use the left indicator to let people (usually car drivers) know it’s clear ahead if they want to pull out and overtake, I usually give it a couple of clicks whilst pulling over as far to the left as I can, most people seem to understand and frequently use their hazards to acknowledge the help they’ve been given.

I do this on S/C’s to allow the back markers to pass, it’s a 50/50 split on those who get it and those who don’t.
They get one chance, if they don’t get the message then I figure they like doing 38 M.P.H.
In the company handbook of the first firm i drove for in Canada had a part saying no signaling of any sort to following vehicles to overtake.
the reason i was given was if he pulled out and went headon into an oncoming vehicle YOU would be considered partly to blame.
never consider everyone as good a driver as you are.

For the most part yes it is, or they may often flash a couple of times with the right indicator.
This habit came from Europe as far as I can remember & it was UK drivers who often went over the water who bought back the habit of flashing the indicator to the left again after they were in to acknowledge you flashing them in.
i’ve found in latvia/lithuania etc, where there are alot of single carriageways, this seems quite common practice, most give you the sign, pull right over, and away you go, and ifneeds be, most seem to back off abit aswell to aid your overtake.

sometimes you get the idiots behind you who dont get the message and the cars behind them start flashing them
9 times out of 10 they flash their hazards to thank you.
Also if I have bikers behind I keep as far left as I can as they have a better view then of the road ahead, there were 4 london ambulance bikers up by Oswestry the other day ( ) I kept as far left as I could and they all did the take one hand off the handlebar and wave thing.

chances are if there is a bobby behind you he will get bored too and do one, then you can toe it a little…
i usually drive around the lincs are and it seems common place
i even get over taken by artics on SCs - sometimes really ■■■■■■ me off…
This is common practice north of the border, especially north of the Glasgow/Edinburgh corridor

Reminds me of the times I was going flat out on A roads, I had a car come up behind me on both occasions, I flashed the left indicator, the first time a silver lexus passed me and when he got in front he flashed two blue and red lights for a second then shot off, was an unmarked car second time I was on the outskirts of Hereford about 5am, I was doing 56mph, a vehicle caught up with me so I flashed the left indicator to let him know it was clear, I looked in the window as he passed and it was a marked BMW X5
really expecting to get a pull but he flashed his hazards and dissapeared
I am pretty sure the only people that hate lorry drivers speeding are fixed cameras (GATSOS) and those speed camera vans.
I practice this often when traveling over the A303/A30 Blackdown hills, my truck doesnt pull well with near on 44 tonne and i drop down to 20mph on the steepest parts. The locals know when and where to pass safety but you get the odd out of towner, be it in a HGV or car come steaming up behind and sit right on my tail, weaving all over the place and acting aggressive (like its my fault i dont carry feathers and have a 700hp V8 under the hood ) so its best to let em pass, most truckers seem to appreciate it, not many cars do

No in the Alps
You click left to say NO,dont overtaking now
You click right to say Yes,do overtake now
+6. I still do it though most people are clueless and think you’re turning off or summat even though the indication was fleeting, sometimes repeatedly so.

Used this again today on narrow single carriageways,
I have a much better view than they have and I know they are
getting annoyed sitting behind a truck because they cant see and stuff.
I give two flashes on the left when I can see it is clear to overtake
and then if I have to I slow down.
some clued up car drivers wave , sound horn and put on hazards as
a thank you others just pass you as if you were not there.
anyhow it is good that some or most understand we are trying to
be courteous on the roads
