Leaving the military and after some advice?

Im 23 and I am currently in the process of leaving the military, i have held my class 2 license for a little over 2 years driving on a daily basis in the UK and various places abroad. I have an advance driving qualification (emergency response driver) and i am going to do my C+E, ADR and driver CPC over the next few months.

So i am just wondering how easy i will find it to get work as either a class 1 or 2 driver bearing in mind i am 23?

Any answers, help or advise would be appreciated.

Thanks!

It will be very hard to find work as there is lots of unemployed drivers and few jobs

What part of the country will you be based in?

Thanks for youre replys, I will be in between Northampton and Milton Keynes. There are a lot of agency jobs about when I look on the Internet and I have spoken on the phone with some, however after reading a few posts on here they may just be Trying to keep their numbers up and the jobs they are advertising may not come true.

So by the sounds of things my age probably won’t go against me when trying to get work but there might be a lot more competition for the work?

Tesco’s, Fenny Lock are re’opening.

This was in the local ‘Rag’ back in febuary-

I’m not sure if they’ve filled the positions yet.

Regarding the driver CPC … have you passed the initial LGV driver cpc?

The theory module 2 and practical module 4 of the initial dcpc must be passed before you can do any periodic dcpc hours

Iam an ex serviceman myself only been out for a month and been in my new job for a week Driving class 1. Most employers want two years experience for insurance purposes so I think you will struggle with class1 but class 2 should be a bit easier. I would say I was lucky but I’m a firm believer in making your own luck. I went around firms for months before I left having a chat with TM and found a guy willing to give me a start. Be warned though that from what I have found your millirary experience is worthless, iv spent 4 days with their driver trainer and learnt loads from him. So I guess what I’m saying is it most probably will be a hard slogg but if its what you really want it you just have to work for it and remember nobody likes a moaner lol.

Thanks martinviking ill take a look at that now!!

As far as the module 2 and 4 I’m not sure as I took my test with the military. So I’m assuming I wouldn’t have taken those modules when I took my test. Will I cover these modules when I take my C+E training (it’s with a civilian company). Im glad you have mentioned that as I was under the impression I didn’t have to take those modules because I already have my license.

Cheers for the reply youngy, how have you found the change in jobs since leaving? It makes scenes what you say about the experience, ill just start off driving class 2 and try my luck with class 1 jobs, I don’t mind a bit of hard graft to land on my feet and ill defiantly get out there and put ‘my name’ out there as it were.

Did you have the same issue with modules 2 and 4?

Going by your age and how long you have had the LGV C licence it seems reasonable to assume that you got your very first LGV category on your licence after 10th Sept 2009

That means you MUST pass both initial LGV dcpc modules before you can do any civvy commercial LGV driving

The inital LGV dcpc must be passed before any of the 35 hours periodic dcpc training can count but after passing initial you will have 5 years in which to get the 35 hours

The initial dcpc is a seperate entity so will need to be booked on top of any other LGV training

Passing initial dcpc covers all LGV categories and so does any periodic training

You can do the initial lgv dcpc now if you wish - just ask a LGV training school - cost about £250 to £300 all in probably

Yes i got my cat C after that date. Thanks for clearing that up for me, i shall go and get my initial dcpc done first.

A while ago I contacted Leckonfield on this issue of forces drivers not being given the info on the driver cpc, especially the initial, and they stated that they would inform all of their driver training establishments and drivers who got LGV licences after 09/09/2009 but it seems this may not have happened

If still in the forces can you get them to arrange and pay for it under the release programme ?

To be honest I’m loving it as I was ready to leave the army. I love the freedom and my company are really good they leave you alone to get on with it I just text them when iv tipped then they give me the next job. It is long hours though but I’m not shy of a bit of hard graft and it feels good to work hard for your money. To answer the dcpc question I just did periodic training for resettlement as iv held my licence since 2007.
