hi all
I recently passed my class 1 with the help of chevron training in flint.
I am currently driving the recycling vehicles for chester council and I am looking for class 1 work as driving these puddle hoppers isn’t what I want to do for much longer. My only problem is as most of you know 99% of the work out there is through a recruitment agency I am really thinking of handing my notice in and trying my luck with agency work as this place is getting worse by the day and the money isn’t that great £7.78 ph!!.. I have rang a couple of agencies and they have said the they can get me class 2 work I was thinking that if I take class 2 work and the company I go to need a class 1 driver I am in the right place to get that chance.
if anyone has been in this sort of situation and took the gamble of leaving a perm job I would be grateful of your advice of whether this is the best move to make as I am not sure how many more days I can last jumping in and out of a wagon 300+ times a day emptying boxes at the side of the road

regards

Hi it all depends on your personal circumstances and preferences for you. On one hand £7.78 an hour is ■■■■but its better than £12 an hour twice a week isn’t it. If you’ve got a home family car to run you may be better off sticking it out whilst going yard knocking on Weekends, that would be what I would do I have bills car to run and trying to save a bit to start a family I would go round local yards on a Saturday or ring around before handing my notice in. On the other hand if you haven’t got to many commitments and can afford to only do a couple off days a week if the agency haven’t got much and driving class one is what you’ve got your heart set on then ■■■■it and go for it before you regret not doing it. Good luck whatever you choose.
I never, ever suggest to people in full time work that they should hand their notice in and come see me. I do invite them to meet me if they’re looking for a full time position however and always spec them in somewhere before asking them to commit. If agencies have a good relationship with their clients, they’ll have an idea of where they can get you a job after a ten minute conversation and a fair knowledge of your experience / what you’re after.
Taking the risk of leaving a job for a temp-to-perm position is a completely different kettle of fish than leaving to have a stab at agency on the off-chance they can get you some class 1 work.

Been there & done that, although not on the council bins.
Depends upon your individual commitments & circumstances really, no one else can make this judgement call for you.
I’ve walked away from a few proper jobs when I thought they were wrong for me, but I’ve never been stupid enough to walk away from one because I thought the grass was greener on the agency side.
There’s been a few times when I’ve really fallen on my feet by signing up to agency work, I would never have experienced as much variety of work as I have without them. At least now, I know what I don’t want to do . . . !
Personally, I’d take the proper job all the way to its natural end, if it isn’t right for you then you need to move on. But don’t for one minute think that working on the agency is going to be any better.
Best to line up a replacement job before burning the bridges in the current one, signing up with the agencies should be considered your LAST resort.
