Learning to drive

So I’m at an RDC and there is a Ferguson’s transport truck with an L plate on.

There is a chap in his 20’s or 30’s being taught how to drive by an older chap, probably 60’s.

Young lad was reversing onto the bay and the old one is ■■■■■■■ screaming at him, ‘left lock left lock, left lock ffs now right’. Oldie looked at me as if he was looking for some approval but I didn’t give him it. They are now sat in the horrible ■■■■■■■ waiting area at opposite sides of the room :grimacing:

Is this a good way to be learning class 1, on the job, assuming this fella hasn’t passed his test? He is possibly getting a free licence from Fergies but he has to put up with getting screamed at by a fella that looks every inch a stress head and almost certainly not the best teacher.

Sounds “sub-opitmal”.

It used to be fairly normal, not sure if it still goes on but old screamer is almost definitely not properly qualified because he would never pass anything acting like that.
The problem is companies try to do things on the cheap and take an experienced driver (good or bad■■?) and let him try to train a new driver.

Nobody learns anything by being shouted at when it comes to learning to drive. A lot of patience and a calm voice are essential.

To say that my first relatively young ‘qualified’ driving instructor and me didn’t ‘get on’ would be a bleedin understatement.I was then put with a different older instructor who I got on better with. Also later did my class 1 5 years later with him too.Passed class 2 and class 1 first time with 3 weeks instruction in total. On that note old doesn’t always mean old school and there’s nothing wrong with being shouted at ‘if’ it’s for the right reasons in the right circumstances.

Unless that’s his 50th go at messing up getting onto different bays and things and he’s still not getting it and the guy has just run out of patience with him, then no it’s a terrible way to teach.

Quite correct Rowley but if it’s his 50th go the old screamer can’t teach reversing full stop.

My instructor used to give me a right bollocking if i cocked it up, always telling me to stop ■■■■■■■ about as i know i can do it, i often wonder if i did the right thing letting my dad teach me to drive

I imagine that the old guy shouting at the young lad was as near an erection as he could achieve. More to be pitied than laughed at.

I think the old boy, being an ex driver himself isnt qualified tor has the knack to teach…i also believe that drivers or ex drivers are the same…me included, no patience whatsoever, and make bad passengers, always putting your feet to the floor when he/she are braking…ha ha. All of my girls had to use a driving school, because i never had the nerve, and they all passed first time…so something to be said, some can do it, others cannot.

Exactly correct. Just because you are a good driver does not mean you have the ability to teach someone else. Certainly not without correct training.
Hope you have patience when behind the wheel.

I think that it is another case of “those who can do, those who cant teach”.

Sounds like the old thundercnut needs a quick lesson in man management by means of a singing shovel across the napper

Maybe old shouty was the lads father!

I never had anyone teaching me to reverse, he showed me how he did it and left me to practice on my own.

Teaching someone to drive is one thing, but talking someone, step by step, through reversing an artic onto a bay is a whole different kettle of fish.
Christ, all us us who have passed and been doing it for years take a few shunts occasionally, so imagine how hard it is to try and explain which way to turn, whilst the wagon is moving backwards and they maybe don’t steer enough, or too much!!
Plus things look different from the passenger seat.
I tried talking a driver into a shed once, he had passed but was new and struggling as it was quite tight. I ended up doing it myself after a while because I couldn’t explain to him in time what he should be doing and by the time he had done what I was telling him to do, it had gone ■■■■ up!!

That’s how I was taught, I stood outside and watched him reverse into the coned area a few times and then from the passenger seat as he talked me through it.
He then told me to crack on and practise, and he disappeared for a smoke with other instructors.
