Last shift finish time

Mainly a question for the trampers, do you expect to be finished early on your last shift of the week?

Comes from a discussion with a fellow employee that complains that we should be done early on our last shift (normally Friday for us) as we’ve been away all week. To put it into context most of the fleet will be back by 6pm at the latest with the odd one back later or running in/working Saturday. Start times in the week are never before 4am and mostly you’ll be starting around 6 due to the opening times of where we go with most closing around 5/6pm.

This guy was saying we should be back mid afternoon!! Personally, I expect to get back when I’m finished what ever time that is. The last few week it’s been 5/6pm but with bank holiday traffic and a puncture (sod’s law especially as the trucks being taken off the fleet this week :unamused: :unamused: ) I got back at 8pm then had to empty my gear as I’m on holiday and changing trucks when I get back so got home at 9.30pm. Out of 40 trucks, 2 got back just after me and 4 were still out as working the Saturday, the rest were all parked and gone home, so not too bad.

This is why I see adverts stating that Friday is a day like any other so you will be expected to work the day.

Depends on what your term of “tramping” is,just because your going out with fixed deliveries and times, and out all week is not “tramping” as many will understand it to be.
Going out on Sun / Mon and picking up loads for where ever you can and returning back to base Fri / Sat at what ever time you can, even if its late Saturday, that`s how I would describe “tramping”

This is basically what we do, although not general haulage as we’re in a more specialist field and have regular collections and delivery locations. eg load Birmingham, tip Warrington, reload Manchester, tip York, Reload Hull, tip Buxton etc

There isn’t a finish time in truck driving, you finish whenever you get back whatever time that is and all of the jobs are done

I worked for a Company in Taunton as a tramper. The Bossman wanted everybody back by 14.00 on Friday.

This .

This scenario compares to the most stupid question in the trucking industry, one that Dopey knows all too well. The one where your missus asks “what time will you be coming home for dinner”

I do find it amusing when you call me dopey when I work 5 days a week , whereas you do 6 & then you take your night out gear as you’re not sure you’re going to get back then ( stated on another thread , Sheffield - Bolton - cribs causeway - Sheffield )

If you start at 6 then you shouldn’t be out there at 20.00 , you should of got rid of you’re 15,s by Wednesday ( 13 hrs 1 min of need be ) , as for what time you get back I just wanted to get home , never was like 99 % of idiots on here who would rather stay out & then do a 15 on a sat as apparently they might as well as there out there anyway , I refused to do anything other than straight back to yard ( though that soon stopped when they paid 9 hrs for a hour back to yard ) on agency
I just go back to years ago when you worked together , you had good days , early finishes , late finishes , but that got completely ■■■■■■ up by those 99 % of idiots like on here who turned running in into the norm , then they go shouting off on here about everyone’s ■■■■■■ the job up for them

I work for a firm where we are paid out Monday to Friday but most chase there tail to get back each day and only average a couple of nite a week. Me and a few others stay out all week and our unofficial pay back is you don’t see us in the yard on Monday much before 6 and usually back mid to late afternoon Friday the other payback is I rarely get locals/London as happy to run off when ever

No, never expect it. Hope for it and if you have a decent employer you get on well with they’ll often do their best but otherwise no

It isn’t like ‘any other day’ depending on contracted weekly hours and how many hours you’ve worked Monday to Thursday. No doubt the heroes will want to max out their hours and the guvnor will be happy to pay a fortune in wage costs for a truck parked up going nowhere bearing in mind daily and two weekly max driving time.

Apart from the 13.5hrs on Saturday I can’t remember when I last did a 13, not to mention a 15, as they plan shifts for anything between 8-11hrs, so I’m unlikely to ever use up my 15’s, though I did one 11.5 midweek, throwing the bag in the cab on Saturday was “in case” of getting held up in the traffic on the M5 & M6, fortunately I only hit traffic twice on the M5, around 11a and before the M4 split.
