About time they started clamping down on Motorway lane discipline, it has definitely got worse over the years, especially with the increase in traffic…one of my few pet hates on the road.
You see them everyday driving down the same lane,.sometimes like a long procession, refusing to move over.
That’s ok, up to them, but from our pov only ok until it baulks yoù up when you lose revs trying to make progress and pass them.. in roadworks for instance.
Then you get the odd stressed frustrated trucker, (usually Billy Bigbollocks in his V8) sat right up the arse of the car at the back of the queue.
It’s just causes and exacerbates bad driving all round.
Even some truck ‘‘drivers’’ are doing it now, lane hogging ffs ..
In driver training I was slways taught move back to left asap when safe and appropriate, it was drummed into us all the time (along with bridge heights awareness btw ,)
Maybe even training has been dumbed down like everything else.
And don’t get me started on 4 lane ‘non hard shoulder’ sections, they spend millions widening the motorway to 4 lanes, and these clowns essentially turn it back into a 3 lane m.way.
You notice it even more when driving your car on there.
Totally agree but all the do is put a sign up keep left unless overtaking.
On 4 lane stretches lane ones near always empty.
And my pet hate. when signs say lanes closed in 800yds 600 yds amount of cars and trucks who bomb along see the cones then panic and force there way in.
Driving standards have gone problem is not many police around to stop them.
Unless you hit a anpr and it comes up as no tax or insurane dont think police bother in my opinion
What I sometimes do, in my car, or a 4 lane section if I am a truck, if a car doing 50 or less hogging the lane , I overtake them, pull back into lane 1,then slow down just a bit to let overtake me. Then I do it again. One time I did this 10 times to one car once coming up the M5 before he realised
It’s obviously more a question of the speed they are driving at.If a car is holding up a truck that’s more a question of speed than lane.Generally lane 1 is a no go area because of bleedin trucks often even cars running at less than 55 mph.Causing other trucks to then block lane 2, or even lane 3 of a 4 lane motorway.
The tailbacks in the overtaking lanes are also caused by overtaking traffic that’s caught up and stuck behind someone who doesn’t want to do more than 60 mph including even trucks and people towing trailers using the outside lanes. Then there’s the speed limits and cameras. In which case idiots wanting to run at 80 mph + construing anyone ahead of them doing less as a lane hogger.
Motorways are basically a useless unfit for purpose basket case.I’ll be doing a regular London to Stockport run tomorrow I’ll only be using the M40 to the A43 then all A roads from there.Sometimes even from only High Wycombe.
Reason they do it is because they feel safe there. And don’t have to do anything much
If your in lane 1 you have to slow down /speed up to allow traffic to join have to watch sliproads for cars joining etc.
In middle lane you have no worries people can join the motorway overtake you and you don’t have any worries.
Yes they cause traffic problems but they don’t care there because people can go around them and they don’t have to think to much.
And it’s people of all ages who do this not just older ones
One thing I love about retirement is the fact I don’t have to use those type of roads anymore, I haven’t touched a motorway in eight years since retiring, if I have to travel any distance these days (which is rare) my concessionary travel pass covers me.
Middle lane hoggers sat at 50 on a free flowing motorway I just go up the inside of them.
The only ones that kinda frustrate me are those who sit at the side of the trailer, matching your speed, making no effort to pass. Pop the right indicator on and maybe a little flick of right hand down (the wind caught me lol) and they usually clear off
I’m nearer to 70 than 60 and still happy to run at 120 mph + in lane 1 of remaining unlimited sections of autobahn.Did another great road trip to Austria and Italy this Summer.
Was using better old school lane discipline than the younger German generations.
It helps when trucks stay on the limiter and cars don’t needlessly dawdle creating the typical slower and slower knock on ripple effects caused by drivers here who just can’t drive whether it’s a truck or a car. Also clearly a big problem with crash for cash scammers and unlicenced drivers infesting the motorways and sometimes A roads.
