Lane Departure Warning System

getting a brand new Daf with this system installed next week.the ‘Driver Instructor’ has said if you switch this off, they will want to know why if you are involved in an accident.all the other lads says it gets on their ■■■■ constantly bleeping away.anyone else on here suffering it?

We’ve just had new merc units delivered which have got lane assist, a trainer tried to collar me to sign me off to use them before I finished this afternoon but I didn’t wanna hang around so I’ll find out next week what it’s all about.

They’ve also got brake assist whatever that is.

Lane departure warning and advanced emergency brake assist are now statutory requirements on new vehicles.

If you use your indicators, that should stop the lane assist annoying you.[emoji3]

Is that the thing I’ve had fitted “Cher Cher vehicle turning left Cher Cher Vehicle turning left”. If it is I feel for you. I gotta put some tape over the speaker as it hurts my ears when it beeps to warn me about a cyclist (that isn’t there), to the extent that I sometimes end up cancelling the indicator to stop the piercing noise in my ear. It’s a good thing warning cyclists but the sensors that pick up any object need disabling as I’m now so used to it beeping for no reason it doesn’t act as a warning but as something you just expect and ignore.

The lane assist sounds an alarm when you drift from you’re lane, the brake assist is coupled to a forward facing radar that detects stopped or slowing traffic this system will also adjust you’re speed/distance in slow moving stop/start traffic, unlikely to stop club plant pot wrecking every new piece of kit that enters the depot.

Perhaps that could invent a hang the straps up properly assist, or missed the pin (again) assist.

The divs in London and at roadworks are gonna love the gaps the forward radar gives them to cut in. And when one does cut in does this then cause the unit to perform an emergency stop? It sounds dangerous to me. Hope I don’t get one that does it.

Will Gaffa Tape will do the Trick?

Yes. Had it since last year when we got new 64 plat CFs. First order of business is to turn it off. Do you have the adaptive cruise control as well? A good idea to turn that off in busy traffic too or you’ll be doing emergency braking all the time, especially at motorway sliproads with traffic diving into the space in front of you to enter or leave. It does however serve a purpose and is well handy going through the M1 and A1 50MPH roadworks for miles on end.

Also make sure that the downhill CC is turned on. It’ll hold 40 tonnes coming down Windy Hill at a few kph above the cruise control setting. Don’t worry about the revs going up to just below the redline when it does it.

Is it that bad? I thought the adaptive CC only worked above a certain speed? Something like 15mph?

I also thought if you used your indicators properly the LDWS wouldn’t be a problem?

Teething problems eh?

yes i think they have the adaptive cruise control as well Conor…roll on Monday :frowning:

I’ve just got a lorry with LDWS and AEBS , the lane departure isn’t bad only makes a noise when you don’t indicate , but the auto braking is a bit stupid , it’s never braked for me yet but travelling down a road where cars are double parked it was flashing and beeping at me

we got a new daf with these fitted last month. Need to switch it off through roadworks on motorway as it still picks up the old white lines that have been blacked over temporally

Its not the “LDWS” but its the braking system: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Q5tVnzJj_s

Wait til you start going under bridges and it sounds a collision detection warning. That proper wakes you up. You’ll find certain bridges will do it but only those. For one of our wagons its the one just north of J50 A1M but only going southbound. Does it every single time.

The worst is driving towards traffic lights or a roundabout with a small island at the give way and the lane is offset to left. As you approach it detects the sign/light directly ahead of you and whacks the brakes on.

Not only the drivers of lorries fitted with this but also other lorries not fitted with it need to start leaving more distance between vehicles. These systems are far from spot on and you and the driver in the wagon behind you will find times when you’re braking and braking hard unexpectedly at times you’d never even back off such as a vehicle in front ahead exiting into a garage which has slowed down and you know it’ll have cleared the road but the system doesn’t. As far as I know its going to be mandatory soon, one of the reasons we already got it fitted on the new fleet apparently. Those who are used to driving up the chuff of other lorries, especially the pallet network boys, need to start leaving a lot more space or you may find yourself up the back of the wagon you were following.

I said to someone they will be good but they need working on at the minute , I came off the prison roundabout going towards the docks in hull the other day and a van was indicating turning into the prison , as I was speeding up and moving over it started beeping and flashing at me!!

I have these systems fitted to my car lane dep is good for motorways and main roads but as people say if you drive properly and indicate it cuts it out, but its a pain on small roads and I should think even worse in a lorry where you cant
help crossing the white line, also works on the nearside as well. As for emergency brake I have had the light and warning beeper come on if someone in front stops a bit quick but never had the brakes come on as I have reacted by then, although as said if you keep your distance and stay alert it should never come on. ACC is again good on mways used it in a Volvo great especialy when its a bit misty, it will only brake if a vehicle gets between you and vehicle in front and slows down as long as they are either keeping pace or moving away it wont react. Mind you when it does even with seatbelt on prepare to remove your face from the windscreen I found it a bit powerful. As for my car its supposed to stop automatically if something is in front and I dont react up to about 19mph havnt tried it yet any volunteers like to stand in front of me and see if it works. Thought this might be more fun than me driving straight at a wall to try it out.

Would only be dangerous for the richard head sat up ya arse!

All this kind of ■■■■■■■■ just increases my determination to jack driving asap. I’ve passed my test and am able to drive ( I think) to a reasonable standard with no accident or incident in 17 years of lorrying. If I don’t need to indicate, I won’t- what I don’t need is a truck mithering me or even worse, making decisions for me. If I’m the driver that’s what I want to do, on my own without supervision thank you very much. If you can’t drive without the truck/ car making decisions for you then frankly you shouldn’t be on the road. I know that truckers don’t have much choice in the kit they’re given it just annoys me that everything has to be dumbed down to accomodate the lowest common denominator, ie the numpties who can’t drive and keep falling off the road/ smaking into other vehicles. :imp:

Rant over :frowning:
