Lane closures

If you was to come across a lane closure that didnt have a speed limit on it, ie dual carriageway would you go thought the lane closure at 50 or slow down , i slowed down last night to 45 and still got flashed at by the truck carrying the cone layers, surely they should place or put up a tempory speed limit to protect the workers ,or do you think i cheesed them off because they got a bit wet from my service water spray

narrrrr. speed up.
and if the jobsworth flashes you, then stop and ask if he knows you.

Your choice entirely, but the cone heads won’t be flashing at every truck that comes through :open_mouth:
What were you doing to upset them

I’ll give you a clue, read the topic at the top of the page :smiling_imp:

The op was asking if there are roadworks and lane closures but the speed limit is not reduced then can he legally carry on at the limit set for no roadworks and legally he can obviously.

Unless you have legal speed limit signs posted ie. red circles with black numbers inside then the normal speed limit applies, anything else is advisory.

No, he didn’t ask that. Wether it was legal was never questioned. He asked

If there was no speed limits posted, i asked what would you do , and i did slow down , so get of your ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā–  high horse , jobsworth

True, I’d also keep a look out for cones flying about or workers who may be crossing or putting up signs…

Sorry. I’m one of them lads who has to work on the hard shoulder (heavy recovery), and 3 times I been lifted clean off my feet by the draught of an artic. Twice been thrown into lane 1 (the draught lifts you up then throws you around the back of the trailer, and you’ve no control over it whatsoever), but luckily enough there was nowt behind it for a couple hundred yards, I was able to roll quickly back to the hard shoulder.
Third time was in heavy but fast traffic, and the only thing that stopped me being thrown into the road was the straps on the tautliner I was working on, I managed to grab them on the way past!
If I hadn’t managed to grab them straps, I’d have been thrown in front of the next artic, about 20 yards behind this one, and also on the limiter.

If I come across as being on my high hore, it’s because I’ve been close to being killed, in the process of helping another driver out.
This scenario can be avoided by moving over or slowing down when there’s people working on the hard shoulder.
Which you did, so thanks.

Just to inject (no pun intended) a bit of humour into an otherwise serious thread - I heard there’s quite a lot of those in various cities around the country

Back to serious mode: men working in the road - even if standing on the back of a truck = slow down markedly.

No I would not do 50, as I have for the last few weeks on the a38 at night I would keep my speed at 56. The lads working on those stretches don’t even look up when I’ve went past at speed so that will do for me.

sorry, but if you are trying to do your job on hard shoulder and it really is unsafe ask the Highways Agency to get a unit to implimenta lane one closure, you can also ask the RCC staff via the #sos box to put up signs they sometines do to assist.

Thats the nature of the job im afraid , never understood why the hard shoulders wasnt made a lot wider, Isnt it the traffic wombles jobs now to assist in these situations so recovery agencies can carry out there work in a safezone. As for tempory lane closures, surely its in there s.s.o.w. to put up these signs to protect themselves.

i do slow down a bit when lane closures ,workmen in road etc etc

obviously 50 isn’t slow enough on a dual carraigeway because on the a631 a few weeks ago they reduced it from 50 to 30 for the roadworks :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

Trouble is gents, if the casualty vehicle is fully on the hard shoulder, the HA ain’t going to shut lane 1.
To be fair, shutting lane 1 every time there’s a broken down car/truck on the hard shoulder would cause chaos.
In these cases, the best the HA will do is sit behind with the flashy lights going.
This isn’t going to stop that draught the artics produce when they pass on the limiter.
Only thing that’ll reduce this risk is for the driver to either move over, or slow down.

Despite popular belief, the HA ain’t at our beckon call, we’re finding increasingly we ring for backup and they’ll tell us ā€œno one available, be half an hour- an hourā€.

As I understand it, they no longer ā€˜patrol’ the roads either, can’t afford the diesel
So they’ll park up somewhere and wait for people to ring them. Funny that we ring, no-one available :frowning:
