So after being licensed for just a month and only having done the odd days work here and there for the agency, I have secured myself a full time job for Wrings Transport driving an 18 tonner. Chuffed to pieces, especially as I kept being told noone would touch me till I turned 25(I’m 23). Just goes to show there is still hope!
Well done mate.
Now the learning begins !
(just as the Sprogs go back to school, LOL !)
Try to be parked up/delivering between 8-9am, keeps the stress levels low !
Well done mate, gives the rest of us newies hope.
Cheers
Gareth

Thanks mate, really glad to have some stability now. That’s good advice right there!

Thanks Mate,
To be honest I think its about attitude and persistence. After numerous phone calls, someone was finally willing to hear me out!
That is good news and well done.Wrings are a good firm. Will they get you on the artics and pay for the training if you have no artic licence.?Stay with it.You will get days when you want to leave the job.Tight delivery points.Moaning customers.General public who are thick. And have no clue about transport.I see Wrings at Dsv Avonmouth quite a lot.
Well done!
I have found there is loads of work out there and I have just been going job to job without any problem. All the agencies initially said no sorry must have your licence for 2 years blah blah but if you keep at them someone will give you a job then you are in.
Started back on Class 2 in May and once one agency gave me work they all did (registered with 4)
Passed class 1 August 2 and all of them said no you have to keep doing class 2. Then one of them give me Potters Logistics and now another has got me container work close to home.
There ARE jobs for Newbies but it does depend on YOUR location and YOUR attitude. I live in Leeds central to all motorways and the country where there is a lot of logistic companies AND I will work weekends nights or whatever to get my big foot in the door

Its actually the dsv contract I’m going to be on. And yeah they actually mentioned in the interview that if I do a good job that they would consider putting me through the class one, so fingers crossed that it all goes well!

Yeah I do agree that its not as bad for newbies as many would suggest, the day I passed my test I had work, but the only problem I’ve had with agency is low rates and companies cancelling last minute. But it gave me a chance to go out and do a little bit of work so that I move onto full time employment! And definitely agree with the working any day, any time thing to get given a chance, work is work afterall!
Don’t worry too much about deadlines or the factory shuts at such a time and the truck must be there. If its late its late. The thing the factory is still there the next day when you pull in they we did not know you were coming or if they did they say you are too early.
Managers tell porky pies then blame drivers for being late when you were not late.
I get asked where i am when they are too lazy to use the tracker.
Hey Chunkzilla!
Congrats on the proper job mate. That’s great news and really does show other newbies if you have a decent attitude towards work you will find it. Keep us posted with how it goes. All the best mate.

Cheers for the advice mate,
so far I’ve found no matter where you go or what time you arrive, that they aren’t ready for you. The way I see it is, it gets there when it gets there, I’m not gonna put my license in jeopardy to meet deadlines.

Thanks Mate,
I’m over the moon to be honest and thought I should post this on here as I so often hear/read that newbies can’t find work, so I thought I’d show it is possible. You just got to stay positive and knock on as many doors as possible.

That is why I registered with 4 agencies. I was with Drivelink working for Yusen Logistics and in 2 weeks 3 shifts were cancelled and I NEVER got paid for it! The first day it happened I was stood there 5am dressed up and nowhere to go? So I started ringing around for work but they said you need to be registered with us. So I got in the car and drove to them and got work for that night! Next day I could not work my normal shift as I was now in a rest period so I used the time to register with another 2 agencies and the next cancellation I got work from them. I have been doing work for all 4 agencies and now have this container work class 1 which I like. So it pays to register with 4/5 agencies to cover the cancellations and bad payers. You can then move quickly.
The agencies lie and use you! My motto is USE THEM BACK and be ruthless, play them against each other so if one says “It is a good job but only pays £8 per hour” I say Oh OK then the other agency has one for me for £9 per hour so I think I will go with that? THen you often hear the words “Well hang on a minute let me see what I can do?” Within 15 minues they ring you back with a an offer of £9 per hour lol and would have you believe they have just driven a hard bargain with the client when in truth they just had a cup of coffee and waited 10 minutes lol

Yeah definitely good to play them against each other to get the most out of them, but I’ve got to be honest and say I’m glad to be off the agencies and onto regular work(plus with the possibility of being put through my Class 1) I think its going to be a good break
