All the previous pictures where of the wagons with the familiar red sign writing but from now on it goes to the recognisable silver that is still used today on the newer fleet. The next Daffy duck to join was to be known as L2LBH (well used these number plates!) Another DAF XF but a 480hp (for Annalong depot!). This model had the one and only ever silver customised bumper!!! The old L2LBH 4x2 430 XF was traded in to local DAF agents Lancashire DAF at Walton Summit Preston.
Enjoying the story - livery shows can be simple but very effective.
The 4x2 Volvo FH460 which were L1 L2 had done their service in the LB fleet both these girls where traded into local Volvo agents Thomas Hardie Commercials for the new generation cabbed Volvo FH12 these were the 460hp with manual gearbox,s 6x2 midlift pusher axles. LB had fitted the tipping gear on to the 2 Volvo,s as he has fitted on every wagon he had owned. Both these girls had the distinctive silver sign writing.
L3LBH was now on the new FH12 460 was driven by “marra barra” and identical sister L4LBH was driven by Simon "sore knee,s"Woods. After some time Simon jumped ship and Derek Taylor took over L4,s reigns as the new driver being an experienced tipper man who use to work for a local haulier.

Its all change again when LB has a deal with James Hart of Chorley and trades in the old L1 the 6x2 XF 430 and L2 the old 6x2 XF 480 to acquire 2x DAF 6X2 480 Super Space. Lance had taken the tipping gear of old DAF,s which where fitted straight onto the 2 new DAF,s stickered up and ready to go! The LB fleet went up to 5 trucks with the addition of a 530hp 6x2 DAF Super Space that he bought from Lancashire DAF,a owner driver was selling up after being on the TDG tissue contract (so she had,nt carried a lot of weight until now!!!).
As time goes by all three of the super spaces started showing signs of problems water problems with between 630000 to 660000k,s on the clock with head gaskets and cracking heads, but fair play to DAF they supplied the parts and Lance did the most important job of making sure they where properly fitted with his mechanical knowledge which he has learnt from the past! (the three super spaces will be right now !!).In the future LB parted company with the three DAF,s 1x 480 S/S going to local haulier and friend Ian Parkinson of Preston,1x 480 S/S going to DG Taylor commercial and trailer sales at Driffield,1x 530 S/S and the 2 460XL FH12 went to Thomas Hardie Commercials local Volvo agents at Preston. The next three Volvos to land in the fleet FH12 XL 480,s 6x2 midlift pusher axles with I shift, small ad blue tanks which where L2,L3 and L4LBH. Lance takes all the hydraulic equipment of all the units he is trading in to be fitted to the new units onto them as soon as they arrive at depot. All stickered up and hydrulics fitted and ready to go again !!!
Lance acquires a second hand Volvo FH12 XL 480 6x2 midlift pusher axle from a local owner driver Kenny Preston of Chipping Lancashire which as alloy wheels and twin fuel tanks and has been well looked after. The registration is PO56BOV.

MAJOR MISHAP ! The miles and the days you do driving there has to be inevitable crashes, bad luck or what ever you want to call it, it happens,as long nobody is hurt or killed we can built our trucks to be great again! (although this was very rare at LB,s still an excellent bunch of drivers that anybody would gladly employ straight away!!!).It was John “Burnley” Fegan driving Irish Bob’s ( Robert McConnell from the Annalong depot) wagon L2LBH. John hit black ice and suffered the horrendous damages to the wagon unhurt himself but in severe shock! He was running empty early one morning between Newry and Dundalk when the accident happened. The wagon was recovered by “Annalong depot” McConnell Haulage Ivan (who did all the work) Bob (who was to cold!) and boss Desmond.L2LBH was loaded onto their low loader and shipped back to the UK. She was collected from Heysham by LB driving L4LBH. At least nobody was hurt except our pride! But she will be rebuilt as good as new.The story will continue!!!![]()
I remember this night well it was cold night john stayed with me till he got a lift on the next truck home
LB,s latest acquisition is a solitary new DAF XF 510 6x2 with weight saving axle this brings the fleet number up to 5,this was bought from Lancashire Daf of Walton Summit Preston which joins the fleet but it takes Lance no time to fit the tipping gear and is stickered up ready to go! It was an excellent wagon to start off with but after 18 months of service (being serviced and its 6 weekly inspections at Lancashire Daf) the trouble started first the turbo went Rikki rang LB mid morning to tell him of the break down LB said do not start it! Recovery wagon took it to Daf at Milton Keynes, there fitter started it! Put new turbo on started it without flushing everything out this knackered the new turbo and set fire to the exhaust system because it was filled with oil! again a new turbo was fitted. It was eventually repaired properly at a cost to Daf of £6500 !!! AND plenty of money lost in revenue!!! where no compensation was given. Back on the road for about 4 months when it blew another turbo! then the water pump, then the radiator, then the air conditioning pump, then it was the exciter rings on the rear axle, then front and rear discs, then front nearside hub bearing, then camshaft (meaning engine out) ,then oil cooler, then it needed a new clutch, numerous ad blue sensors and this was all within 6 months !!! Lance said this wagon has got to go I,ve had enough. Lance works out that it had cost roughly £20,000 to repair which Daf paid £12,000 and Lance the rest! Never again will a DAF come into service for me again worst wagon I have ever owned !!!. Daf will have to eat a lot of humble pie and put a wagon in at a very good price to get me interested in buying one ever again!!!.
Hi,
I am half sure lance rang me a few years back telling me about a turbo traumatised daf near pontrilas loaded with sand for Newport dock.wasn’t there some prop shaft trouble also
or am I getting confused
come on m8 gives us the full storey.
Regards andrew.

To be continued !!!
LB had so much trouble with the DAF he had to get rid,the only manufacturer that had a wagon on the shelf to speak was the “trabant”! (as the welsh contingent call them) Renault. It is a 460 dxi (not many about) that has a Volvo engine, Volvo gearbox and Volvo back end with the familiar trabant cab.LB did the deal getting three years warranty and he had the tipping gear since it is a Volvo underneath. The trabant was bought from JDS Trucks in Blackburn. Only needed to sticker it up and on the road she goes.
The DAF was banded up and down the country for 12 months eventually being sold and put back on the road only to run 2 weeks and blowing the turbo again!
Trabant in action!!!
With the addition of the Renault into the LB fleet it was time to renew the Volvo,s and with a cancelled order he purchased 3 x Volvo FH13 XL Globetrotters 460 6x2 lift pusher axles with larger than usual ad blue tanks and reliable I shift gearbox and usual Volvo refinements for the drivers to enjoy and look after. The older 4 x FH,s that where traded in were stripped of their tipping hydraulics and with expert precision were fitted to the new FH,s like clockwork. The old registrations have been held on retention and all 4 new units live with the given registrations.
