Knightsbridge balcony collapse: UPDATED

Two men have died and six other people have been injured after part of a balcony collapsed in west London.

Railings on the balcony of a building at Cadogan Square, Knightsbridge, collapsed at about 10:00 GMT, London Ambulance Service (LAS) said.

The men who died were believed to be workmen, according to Scotland Yard.

Eight people were treated for injuries with one man dying at the scene and another dying after being taken to hospital, LAS said.

Chelsea and Fulham MP Greg Hands believes the deceased were removal men.

He tweeted: "Balcony collapse in Cadogan Sq. Just spoke with Cadogan Ests [Cadogan Estates, a property company], not their property, but believe balcony broke when the removal men were moving a sofa out and the combined weight might have broken it.

“Casualties were removal staff. My thoughts are with their families.”

A neighbour, who wanted to remain anonymous, told BBC News: “They were trying to pull a couch up to the first floor apartment with ropes. Was apparently too heavy. The fence broke off and fell on the workmen below.”

"It has happened in a classic, red-brick square in an exclusive part of Knightsbridge.

"There is police tape in front of several houses with police officers inside the cordon.

"The balcony above a police tent is missing the decorative, wrought iron railings featured in the neighbouring properties.

“There are no emergency sirens here, just an eerie silence.”

Cadogan Square is made up of residential properties, with many of the buildings divided into flats.

The first-floor balcony is believed to have been connected to property number 37, a five-storey terraced building.

The iron railing appears to have fallen about 10m (33ft) to the ground although the stone base of the balcony looks undamaged.

A number of long ropes are hanging from the balcony to the ground where plastic sheets are gathered.

A police tent has been erected on the pavement below and the street has been closed to the public.

A LAS spokesman said: "Sadly, a man died at the scene.

"We sent three ambulance crews, an advanced paramedic, the hazardous response team and a London air ambulance.

"We treated eight people. Every effort was made to resuscitate a patient.

“Another man was taken to St Mary’s Hospital.”

Police are in the process of identifying the dead men’s next of kin while an investigation is under way to establish the circumstances.

The Health and Safety Executive and the local authority have been informed.

It appears they were removal men. Sad. RIP

RIP, I wonder how many times they’ve done a removal like this and never expected this to happen.

Said on the news tonight they were “Polish Hands”.

My dad reckoned that “being a removal man was the best job he’d ever had”. It might have been in the 50’s, but I can’t see it myself in today’s world.
Two lads who didn’t go home to their loved ones.
None of us expect to get killed in the line of duty when shifting stuff from A to B - which is essentially the same business for all of us.

RIP.

Why are you copying non-trucking related BBC news articles to the truck topics forum? There’s enough ■■■■ on this site as it is without you adding to it. Flagged for deletion.

Why are you whinging about it (and in doing so, quoting the entire article) thus adding to the alleged clutter…?

Agree with you. LHD just look on the Old Time Forum, there’re at least two threads about removal companies on there. Just because they don’t do Truckfest or have poncey stickers and tat glued on their motors, doesn’t mean they aren’t lorry drivers.
Too much snobbery on here.

I wouldn’t think being a removal man counts you as a trucker…possibly the driver in a slightly relative way,but certainly not the accompanying humpers.i don’t see whats wrong with the post though as its certainly less boring that a fair few on topic posts in here truck related or otherwise.its something to read for a few mins, whats wrong with that? accidents happen, but itl be forgotten about tomorrow as despite the no doubt forthcoming posts on here, then nobody will lose any sleep about it anymore than the 2 flipflops that torched themselves at Calais 2 days ago.poor workies whoever they are,but I cant help wondering if the following link flashed into anyones minds when they read the post. youtube.com/watch?v=r5■■9LX2es4 theres always humor in tragedy. saves being a gloom and doom merchant.no disrespect to whoevers pegged it but no matter what disaster there is in the world, normally the 1st thing you hear about it is when you get a joke txt relating to it. if its not your immediate family or pal, then you may sympathise with it,but you wont be needing any trauma counselling.not everybody has similar views on topics, hence its a discussion forum…so discuss

Difference is DD you are not sharing a joke in private with your mates, via text or over a beer in the pub… you are publishing it so the whole wide world can see, and it sticks around unlike a passing comment. . Familes and colleagues do often search for news about incidents, and we have had them contact us in the past about supposedly “funny” posts on here that they find extremely hurtful and painful at what is a terrible time for them.

Keep your supposedly funnies to your mates text numbers and private chats. Its called having a modicum of decency.

If you struggle with this we can help by checking all your posts before they appear as some already realise

so what your basically saying is that unless someone posts something that you don’t find offensive then its removed. judging by the posts you read on here, theres plenty of members with similar ,better or worse (depending on your sense of humor) opinions similar to myself. id like to think I just post honest opinions on a discussion forum, hence that’s what its meant to be…its called your sense of humour is different from others.or when someone clucks and tuts, you just play safe and bin the post.i cant really see someone losing their man joining here to lookup and see if anyone wrote anything about them.i think your giving yourself a false sense of self importance there, and its not the 1st comment someone has made about moderators becoming too big for their boots etc on this thing…there was me thinking everyone is entitlet to their own opinion in a discussion forum, but apparently not. personally I do find it funny when migrants ,or macodougalls etc come to greif, and I do tend no doubt like others to see humor in tragedy.thats what lifes all about and in theory everyones entitled to their own opinion,…happy days anyway…its still fun while it lasts…

The guidelines are clear… You agreed to them when you signed up for this forum, it is up to you to ensure your posts stay within them, if they don’t they will be removed. Every website that has comments or discussion has a set of standards that they ask users to adhere to, this one is no different.

im somewhat at a disadvantage to reply as its your ball etc…happy days.

Two men who died after they fell from a balcony at Cadogan Square in west London have been named by police.

Tomasz Procko, 22, and Karol Szymanski, 29, had been delivering sofas to the Knightsbridge property on Friday morning when the balcony collapsed.

Mr Procko, of Greenford, west London, died at the scene while Mr Szymanski, of Wembley, north-west London, died later in hospital.

Both men were originally from Poland. Their next of kin had been informed.

RIP

So DD you think removal drivers don’t really qualify as real truckers. Some of these lads are in Spain, Portugal, France every week and probably get a lot further than you mileage wise. They maybe don’t have the tarted up artic but that wont stop them maybe being a better driver than you even. Eddie.

R.I.P.
Two fellas went to work and aren’t going home.Who cares a flying frig what they drive or if they’re fat enough to be “real truckers”.

That is a nice Jag!

Radar19:

I used to pass it everyday when I walked to Peter Jones whilst I was last in London. Agreed, it is a beautiful car.

id suppose the ones on long distance continental work would somewhat qualify, though its a tad different to driving solo when your touring about with 2 or 3 in the cab?.when you think of removals men, then your thinking of a nakked out Iveco dodging around the doors.some of them might be around spain etc every week, but id reckon most arnt, and its not exactly trucking in the normally recognised sense? …a labourer /lifter with a driving licence for most of them would be my opinion.i go abroad as well as uk/eire so milage varies, but I wouldn’t have thought that was relevant.
