Key Fuels....Dumb Question

Hi guys, this may seem like a totally dumb question to ask as ive been driving trucks for 2 years. All the jobs ive had since passing my class 1 have all had fuel tanks at the depots so ive never really thought about the type of fuel im puting in.
Anyway ive just started a 10 week contract through my agency & was given a bp fuel card & was shown which pumps i could use by another driver. I always thought diesel was diesel. Anyway we got a message today saying the company would be changing fuel cards & we would only be able to use key fuels & to suss out what garages sell this in advance.
My question is what are key fuels & how do you no if a garage sells it??

Like ive said sorry for the totally dumb question but ive never had to worry about it before. Thanks in advance for any help

Diesel is diesel. Not all garages will accept Key fuel cards always check with the cashier first.

take it you’ll probably have the route mate card then like we have, we get to use key fuels, red fuels (not red diesel!), and uk fuels on the same card.

quite a few places got this, just knowing where they are, have a word with the TM and see if he can get you a book, we get a new one every couple months

Ask for a site book from the Guv’n’or or log on here.

chjones.co.uk/

Useless fact.
The reason it is known as keyfuels is that we use to be issued with a plastic key that was a primitive security device.

:sunglasses: M6 fuels at Shareshill just off juct 11 n/b usually has books lying around, got one there a while back for a mate.

Look for the LOGO

If you have a tomtom and use TT home to keep it upto date there is a keyfuels POI availabul for down load from TT home free of charge and this gives you all the sites you will be able to use.
The POI is also availabul from the keyfuels website but you need your card number and pin to download it this way, but at least this one will be upto date.

I think there is also a text service which texts you the nearest station but I would ony use it for an emergency if it cost me 60 quid and 3 points :stuck_out_tongue:

like he sayd look for the sign, our card accepts these

uk fuels

red

key fuels

dont know if them will come out right, still new to this image posting thing, sorry

oh what u know!!

A website is good if you are online the only real way is to phone the number on th e3back of the card and ask for a book if they say it will cost money just tell them to book it to your boss and send you the book.

BUT DONT ask them to send it to the transport office as none of them will have a clue what it is they will put it on a shelf or in a bin and will NOT have a clue what its for, Ask them to sen it to your home address I have done this with Esso and Keyfuels and they have both done this for me.

Just be very careful as company car drivers use thee cards too and some of the sites have low canopies the book will tell you which ones with its icons.

It amazes me that companies still use cards by these companies as sometimes you have to go a few miles off track to get the fule which really defeats the puropose of the penny or two they get off the price surely companies would save more by using credit cards with cashback schemes? or even using many cards from different companies so the driver can stay on the main routes?.

A friend of mine who does long distance has just been told by his boss that he should use either his Keyfuels or his Esso card as they are paying the same price to buy it in to the yard as it costs at the pump and is more secure, needless to say he is making an absolute fortune filling up at esso stations with the £1 tickets .

Thanks guys for the advice

I wondered why i was told i could only fuel up using the 2 white pumps with the bp logo when using the bp card & not the black pumps with red on them, think this may explain?? Or am i wrong??

yeah something like that, BP have so many bunker/reservoir things under the ground with their fuel in with the white pumps, then the black ones will be red/key/uk or something totally different.

i think anyway, not a specialist, usually tell which pump u want though, if not the cashier will put you right, or iff its 1 of them fandangle machine things it’ll only let u select the pumps u can use

Pain in the arse they are.

Picked up a vehicle to start a shift and noticed that day shift couldnt be bothered looking for one so didnt have enough and going to nearest one would have put 2 hours on my shift.

Book out and saw there was one near my last drop, well so book said.

Got my drops off bar one and headed for fuel on the red, no probs 2 miles away.

We dont do key fuels now you will need to go 20 miles down the road.

Hard shoulder 8 miles later and feeling like a knob as I phoned a breakdown company out to give me some fuel.

As soon as I get handed a card now I phone where I plan to fuel up to confirm opening times, access and acceptability but hate getting them still.

Start planning a fuel stop a lot quicker than you do now would be my advice.

Does anyone know if severn side services on the m48 just after the old severn bridge coming out of wales sells key fuels. Looked on the key fuels site but cant see it. Is the key fuels site upto date??

dont think they are, bridgwater truck stop is if you go that way, or the hideaway truckstop off j17? on the M4

The books are normally updated every 3 or 4 months and sometimes new ones appear in truckstop news

We’ve got a list up in work and quite a few motorway services have just started on the keyfuels network but the only two i can remember for sure are knutsford and chievely
